Forum Smiley Contest
Turn that frown upside down!
Wednesday, February 20, 2008 by Zoomba | Discussion: WinCustomize News
Ok, we have a nice new forum look, but we still have the same old, tired smiley faces we've had for years. Well, it's time for some new ones! Instead of just going out to Google and searching for free smiley sets, we're turning to the community for help. With so many outstanding graphic artists here, I'm betting we'll end up with some outstanding smileys.
Whoever submits the winning smiley set will receive a free ObjectDesktop subscription (or extension to their current sub), as well as having their art become a part of the site for the next several years.
Here are the details:
- All smileys should be 24x24px
- Individual smileys should be in .png format
- You must be able to provide the original Photoshop/Corel/Fireworks/Whatever file used to create the images
- You must, at a minimum, recreate all the smileys already on the site, plus the ones found here. You are however free to make more.
- All smileys should match/have a theme (no pink dinosaur smiley mixed in with a blue alien smiley)
- For new smileys, suggest appropriate text representations
You have until Friday, March 7th to enter. And entering is as simple as making a post on this thread with a preview shot of all of your smileys. We'll pick the winners the following week.
I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with. We're definitely in need of new smileys.
Edit: Updated the contest rules to require a few more smileys. We are giving away an ODNT sub afterall...

EDIT: stripes don't resize very well and a face wouldn't show up against them

Wow. These are some great entries all. It's the weekend and I'm pretty sure we're going to need some time to go over these and decide which one we want to declare the winner, and which are the runners up. I'm glad that's Zoomba's job and not mine ![]()
As soon as I saw horizon and chet's entries the first thought that popped into my head was how to allow users to use *all* of them. I'm going to have to think about that some more. Because I agree that it would be a shame to let any of those go unused.
Now I'll step out of the way and let Zoomba do his thing ![]()

i didn't have much room for either a hand or a party hat, so i left the emotion of congrats to the overly cheesy wink to express. i was toying with the idea of a 24 x 24 that was just the hand so you could give a thumbs up without a smiley, or put it to the side of any of them, like the typical wink + thumbs up, or allow stuff like the sarcastic drunk/tired one giving a thumbs up. mostly i was working under pressure of time, and while i thought i made a good choice in making them bigger so i could put more detail into the expressions, i was a little short sighted on the effect it would have as for putting something like a hand or hat in there too. if i could break the width barrier like cerbro did, that would fix it too. other than that, i was pressed for time and dying for sleep, always more time later~
thanks elvee and cheers zubaz
i think that line of thought occurs and is said in basically every competition or contest, but it just isn't very practical. this isn't just a contest for a prize though, it's supposed to be geared in being helpful to our site as a whole, so it's not going to hurt my feelings if something else is better suited for the task. mixing sets would probably just lose the unity and cohesion you all were looking for in the first place by having an entire matching set.
i didn't enter with the presumption i was going to win, and knew that mine may not be used, but that really wasn't the point or motivation in making them, you don't need to put something to use in order to appreciate it. i was just having a bit of fun, and a few people said they liked mine after i finished playing; that's all i needed to hear to justify my time spent~
but from an application standpoint or in terms of it going to use, if mine didn't go to use here, that's not to say they wouldn't go to use somewhere else, that they need to go to use at all, or that myself or the rest of us would have wasted our time making them in the least.
the very last thing i would want is for mine to be added in out of some form of pity, or for the cohesion to be lost and our smileys end up just a big "mix and match" like deviantart~ so i guess the only thing to say is the same you say in every contest...
good luck to everyone~
besides if nothing else, msn lets me use custom smileys

I don't think any entry should feel bad about 'not' being chosen, all are great and nothing like this is ever a waste.
