Return of the Community Skin Project

Full details coming soon

Wednesday, January 2, 2008 by Zoomba | Discussion: WinCustomize News

Heavy Equipment is one of the largest skin projects ever attempted, with dozens of skins for almost every application imaginable.  It took dozens of skinners months to do, but the result was without a question one of the most impressive skin sets released.  Nothing has really come close since then.

In the past year we've seen groups of skinners get together to do their own smaller skin projects, and while the results have been superb, they lacked scale.  And of course there was some disagreement over being able to call them community projects since they weren't open to absolutely everyone.

Well, in the coming weeks we're going to start to talk about the next true community project.  It will be open to anyone who wants to participate and will accept skins for any application you care to skin.  Jafo himself will be leading the charge on the project and organizing volunteers and work.

As a bit of a preview, the theme of the project is going to be a worn/corroded metal.  Heavy Equipment was so clean and pristine, but now we're going to try something with some years on it, something with more "character" I guess.

If you're interested in the idea, start lining up.  We'll have more details for you soon when we're ready to officially kick things off.  I just wanted to let you know it's coming and see if we can start kicking up some interest and ideas.

Here is a preview of the dream:

The drops will be rolling down the metal slowly. I am still having a bit of trouble rendering, but I should get this out soon!

I've seen two "starts" here. Is this thing moving yet? I've not heard anything more. I thought we were going to get some source graphics or something.

Not sure what people are thinking as far as rusty/worn metal but what is your opinion on these?

They are probably looking for good docks, not the junk you offer.

Oddly enough, the one skin you offer, some OD icons, look alot like messiahs' style of work.

Thanks for the support folks. I'm not worried about it. Let's ignore that mess and keep this thread on topic so it doesn't get out of hand and then closed.

pictoratus - I like those textures. Not sure which one better though.

Me too. It would be best to use more than one for contrast.

Inspiration isn't that hard to find. Just look up a few images and the brain starts to work...

Those round things as buttons maybe?

An idea for a User Pane/Start Panel/Top Frame?

Wallpaper?

Just a few ideas. Come on guys, I know you can do better! Lets get those ideas flowing

Rust in Piece - hmmm, kinda like that

When Heavy Equipment was done all the skinners involved worked from the same set of images...eg buttons, etc...and from a specific few fonts .... so colours, text, and 'button work' wre essentially the same...hence a cohesive suite.

Back then the graphics came from Chad [Crumbut].  This time it'll likely be from me....

Zoomba's thread is just to whet your appetite....

We want to make this something comparatively frequent [as long as the subject matter universally appeals]...

I would love to do a dx stuff(either theme or any gadget) but its my exams which will not allow me to engage in the skinning. Lets see.....
Best of luck everyone. Hope this will rock the skinning world.

Now your talking, Fuzzy.
I think we should shy away from the black and yellow stripes, it's been done to death.
Any paint should be chipped, peeled or faded.

Yes....it possibly/probably will need to be adapted so as to suit the suite 'closely'....

...at a guess...
