i WANT this resolved.......
Friday, November 16, 2007 by Vampothika | Discussion: Community
when does a community skin become a community skin when the community is not involved? Where was the post to inivite skinners for harmoney and whitefire2?
there wasnt a post, it was created by maxstyles crew (and maybe a secret select few from the community)
and yet, suddenly its a community skin?
to me, a community skin is when someone posts they want to make a community skin, and people are allowed to volunteer their services to the skin. The WHOLE community knows about it....(unless they live under a rock) its not a secret and suddenly released as community skin.
yet again i ask, why is maxstyles skins being promoted as community skins when its clear that they are not.
This isnt a flame against Maxstyles.....I just am totally confused.........

I am NOT trying to single out vstyler. why would I? I have no hidden agendas, no animosity, no reservations no prejudice. just a question that should be answered. I personally cant see what the big deal is. Its a real issue with a real answer.

The Harmony suite was put together by the community, it was made by members of Maxstyles AND the WC "community" it was made FOR the community... Pixel-Z made a wall for Harmony , he is NOT a maxstyles artist. Zubaz made a DX object for Harmony he is NOT a Maxstyles artist., mcackerson made a winstep theme for Harmony, he is NOT a maxstyles artist, Morpheus made a logon for Harmony, he is NOT a Maxstyles artist., several screenshots were submitted.. most by folks who are not maxstyles artists.. Feedback was given on the what are you working on thread from many folks who are NOT Maxstyles artists.. I held a name that theme contest for WC Community members who were NOT maxstyles artists or members... and finally I gave away over 25 free harmony skins to people who participated in it as a gesture of thanks and goodwill to the WC community who were all NOT Maxstyles artists.
AGAIN...Kitty. PLEASE..what is it you are not understanding about community?
Resolved.. I hope.

It's just that simple.

When I say community im talking about everyone is allowed to volunteer, not just an annointed group of people that are chosen in secret.
compare harmoney to avmans community halloween blind.........see the difference?
I know I do.

Sorry Bud but I really think that you are the one that is confusing the matter. I understand what you are saying but I think Kitty does have a better idea of what a community project is.
I guess it is safe to say that the Harmony Master Skin was enhanced by community members that added to the suite therfore making it a full suite but I just dont see anything that has a cost attached to it as a community project.

The 2 skins that were the originator of the 'community skin' concept...namely Heavy Equipment and Formula One were both open to 'anyone' wanting to join in and create a skin for what were both very large extensive suites....that meant there was a place in the 'group' for 20 or 30 individual skinners.
Once they were 'selected/joined' the enterprise was kept secret until release...so in that sense it was not open to everyone at all.
With these recent 'community skins' the only real difference is they are significantly smaller and thus have far fewer openings for people to join in and do 'something'.
So...
Are they still 'community skins'?
Must we have a cut-off point in diversification below which they cannot be called 'community' ones?
Do the smaller ones diminish the fame/success of the larger/originals?
Must there be affidavits sworn by all and sundry that they are not partners in some pre-existing company/entity?
Personally, I see them as simply 'smaller'...but otherwise no different at all. [though with group involvement works...bigger will always be better]...

Whatever happened to doing the right thing?
Reply #12 Friday, November 16, 2007 6:34 PM
so that means that harmony and white flame cannot be classed as community skins.....

I believe Jafo answered the question by stating that is WAS considered a community skin. If I have followed this correctly you were told the position was already filled. Hence the fewer openings part due to it being a smaller project.

I didn't make a WAClassic skin for it because I had to pay to play. *shrug* I'm not telling you what you can or cannot do. Mabye kitty is , but not me. All I'm saying is what I think should classify as a 'communtiy project'

Please dont patronize me Kitty I find zero humor in this , I take this extremely seriously. Anyone with half a brain can see that the whole issue was a vendetta against me framed in some bs excuse about you needing to know the meaning of community. You have not only harmed yourself in my eyes but i can assure you others too.. this may not matter you but it certainyl does to me.
Bug.. had you asked for psd's to make your theme you would have gotten them JUST like everyone else who asked for not only permission but psds also.. was granted, I turned down NO requests. Anyone was free to make a skin for harmony and still is. I turned down NO one..

NT, I think you hit the nail on the head in those words. Spot on.
It's splitting hairs but if Harmony was ever refered to as a 'community suite' or words to that effect then that is not right and Kitty has a point. There have been many WB skins in the past where other people have approached the original artist to make things like widgets, winamp skins etc etc but they have never been called 'community skins'. The Halloween skin is an example of a true 'community suite' because it was an 'open invitation' to the whole 'community' to take part, made for the whole 'community' at no cost to the 'community'.
