Microsoft program puts new Windows on old PCs

Well I thought this was interesting, atleast there would appear to be a consumer base out there and an after market need, especially since MS seems to have generated this market.
It would seem that this would allow alot more computers to be used, if only in a reduced capacity because of hardware, after people upgrade to bigger and better systems.

Of cource this will have an adverse effect on the number of PC's in use and which OS is loaded on it XP or Vista. I wonder if MS took that into consideration? Does this also mean that demand or the requirement for XP support has to be looked at. You can imagine refurbished computers get into the hands of folks that don't really have the money to upgrade to Vista, it's not even a choice for most if not all of them.

Microsoft program puts new Windows on old PCs

Under a new program announced Friday, large companies that sell refurbished PCs can get a brand spanking new copy of Windows to put on the machines--provided they pay Microsoft for the privilege.

The initiative, which provides refurbishers with a special version of Windows XP, could help save more machines from heading to the landfill. In many cases, though, it means Microsoft will be getting paid twice for putting Windows on the same PC.

What do you think? Will companies just say no thank you and go the recycle route or potentially put thousand if not hundred of thousand of XP computers back in use?

I've rebirthed probably a dozen PCs...typically 1.6 P4s with 256/512 [wife has one] ...there seems to be a market for 'cheapos' ...coming in around $250-300 AUD.  They all have included an OEM XP Pro Licence [sticker still on machine...though one was particularly problematic as the serial no was partly damaged...and guessing didn't quite work....but a call to MS did].  The OEM is still probably worth around $200 so the 'value' with these machines is in the legit licence...
