The "Star" ratings box

Friday, October 12, 2007 by AiTakahashi | Discussion: Stardock Support General

Hi, I don't know if this is the first time such a request has been made, but in the skin-downloads pages, I've found the download button and skin-ratings box to be in such close proximity that I have on occasion inadvertently clicked a rating, rather than the download button. This is partly due to me being a bit hasty with the mouse, but also the fact that the ratings-box is a mouse-over item. As such, and to illustrate, I went to download Essorant's recently updated "Nuage Redux" 'blind, but by the time I clicked the download button, the ratings mouse-over had activated, and a two-star rating was taken instead. Is there any chance these two entities could be separated some more? (...and if poss, admin - could you adjust my mistaken 2-star rating for that skin to 5 stars?)

Thanks, in advance.

Sometimes when a website is made you get these odd little design flaws.

Dang it!  It's not a 'design flaw' ....it's just one of those cute little quirky things people grow to love....

killjosh, Phoon and Drill'n boss, I'm sure you are all enjoying taking little smart stabs at me for this, but bear in mind, it's not just little noob me who's experienced this "phenomenon". If you'd read the first half of this thread, you'd see a few names I'm fairly sure you'd be a bit less likely to snidely fob-off.

...all seem to be having the same problem I'm sure you reckon is all down to me.

Anyway, forget it. Enough is enough.

ya know, it's kinda funny, but I have absolutely no trouble hitting a rating on my first attempt.

This is not the issue at point here. The issue, due to their closeness is have the rating drop down open when you are trying to click the download button.

Yes, not a big deal, yes not an issue if you slow down but in an overall sense, it was bad placement for the two and has been a reported issue since almost day one of new site.

IMO, it should not have been that big a deal to move the rating stars back under preview thumbnail as they were on old site.

Its always been wacky for me...some of you need to back off the condescending to others just because you may not have a problem...It IS a wonky setup.

It COULD have been fixed easily and LONG ago if someone in charge considered it important.

Perhaps I should have clarified....
Have I ever had the rating drop down open when I meant to download? Yes I have. It was only a minor inconvenience that occurred when I was rushing. Have I ever had the mouse go nuts when trying to rate? NEVER.

Yes I am being condescending because I believe AiTakahashi was being condescending in comment number 28 with...

lol... I guess not. It's not like people have been requesting this change for, ooh... over a year is it?

Oh wait, yes they/we have!

It is more of an issue if you are in a hurry. It is a tad annoying but the website isn't going to burn down because of it. There's more important issues at hand with actual application not functioning properly than to waste time ranting about this little thing.

when he said that, i figured he he didn't want the answer to his question. i know it's been posted somewhere that the issue will be corrected in the site's rebuild in 2008. i agree the issue with the rating stars can be a bit of a problem but it isn't worth bitching about after being told when it will be corrected. i guess some people just like to complain.

I certainly wasn't trying to be condescending...oh who am I kidding. Yes I was. It's one thing to mention an inconvenience, but to continue whining about it after you are told it's being looked into is childish. I make no apologies for my statements.

There are bigger issues on hand to deal with. If you think the ratings box should take precedence over all the other issues, then your priorities are in the wrong place.......

Looked into?...maybe...never any REAL info to suggest a fix IS coming.(none that I've seen anyway)Asking for an update to the staus of an issue isnt childish.

And when did ANYONE say that this issue should take precedent ove ALL other issues?

I didnt see the poster being condescending...merely sarcastic. Some of you practically accused the poster of not being able to use a mouse properly.

I have repeatedly had the same problems...now tell ME,you think I cant use a damn mouse.

The point here was and always has been...this was seen by most as an easy fix...if anyone cared. Its easy to become sarcastic when you begin to perceive that no one does.

Just because some users dont experience the problem,or see it as anything but an annoyance...dosnt mean it SHOULDNT be important(relative to its ease of fixing)to those of us who DO have a prob.

Y'know, if you guys aren't even willing or able to read the whole issue, why bother commenting at all? The menu appearing when going for the download button is no more than an annoyance, but the main issue which you seem to be either ignoring or haven't even realised, is that when trying to rate a skin, the mouse-over menu disappears before the user can select the appropriate rating. If you are not affected by this, it doesn't surprise me that you don't realise how effing frustrating it is.

Frankly, your attitudes are appalling. By all means condemn my own, but please bear in mind that this has, for me at least, been going on for over three months now, and it's still an absolute pain in the ass, just to award a rating.

If this is the treatment a paying subscriber receives from "fellow" members while following up on a legitimate gripe, I may well reconsider my next 2 year sub, and if that sounds childish, tough. You reap what you sow. I've never been a fan of "in-crowd" net communities, and this one is beginning to look distinctly like it.

I'm not part of the in crowd. I've been a member for two months (give or take). But I do understand (and would hope that others would too) that there are bigger priorities. WC is getting revamped this year, so please be patient. Things will come in due time, and although that timeframe may not be a soon as some would like, that's just the way it is.

I.R, we all know of your skills as a skinner... (I've dl'd a bunch of your work myself)

AiTakahasi, just show some patience. This thread isn't even 3 months old. I know it is an issue for you (as well as some others), and I'm pretty sure the net team @ SD knows it too.....

This site is far from perfect, and we all know it. But it IS a great site, problems or not....

Yes, they are a bit.

If one person has an issue with how a site is setout...and others do not, it DOES NOT diminish the legitimacy of complaint of the person who is having the issue.

Fortunately Wincustomize is in the throes of a major rewrite....the good thing is it's called 'WC2K8' and that's this year....so 'bugs' such as this won't have to be endured all that much longer....

AiTakahashi .... possibly much of what you see as 'in-crowd' treatment may just be quirky attempts at humour and gentle banter.

However, if it's people wanting to score points at others' expense then they need to be mindful that it's not acceptable....and there are 'soft speakers with big sticks' around who can adjust attitudes....

Wincustomize.com is a friendly community.

That's not a statement/descriptor..... that is policy....

We've been aware of the issue for some time now. The reason it hasnt been modified is simply that we havent had time allocated to give it any attention.

Does it work? Yes.
Can you rate? Yes.
Is it somewhat of a pain from time to time? Yes.
Will it be fixed? Yes.

If [you] wish to continue to debate the issue, by all means, please feel free. Just bear in mind that the sun will rise tomorrow, the world will continue to rotate and in the grand scheme of things, it's really a minor issue, isn't it?

Its simple, just take ur time hitting the download button, don't mousover rating area.. and it works fine. If your still screwing up.. slow down. If you do not mouseover the rating box.. it will not popup.

BINGO vStyler.. It's the same thing I said. Sorry if some didn't see the humor in the way I said it. Put your little hair's back down now...

...and yet still you haven't absorbed what is the real issue. It is not the download button that's causing the biggest problem - it's when trying to rate a skin, the drop-down menu vanishes before a rating can be made! Jeez... This whole thing could've been avoided if you at least read the posts detailing the problem. If you're still wondering why I'm getting tetchy about this, please put yourself in my position, where it appears that very few are even reading about the issue before flaming me for reporting it.

Jafo & Andrew,

Thank you, and I look forward to the new revamped site. If only someone had said in October that it wouldn't be fixed before then, at least I wouldn't have been expecting progress...

AiTakahashi, when you scroll over the ratings box, go slowly down to the rating you want to give. Especially if it's a five-star. I have noticed that if you go to far past it, you will lose the box. Just make sure your cursor is directly over the rating. Adapt and overcome bud.

That's my solution, at least until the "new and improved" (can you see the sparkles?) WC comes out.....

had a play with this try this come from above the rating box inline with 3 stars and move down middle of rating menu stays there every time until I rate.

Its a matter of taking ur time whether its rating or downloading.. like Killajosh said.. adapt.

The nice thing of course is that if you "mis-rate" you can re-rate and the last rating stands.

Probably because no-one really knew what the next day/week/month held.....mission-critical 'bugs' can be allocated time/resources for correction....others are handled 'as and when' or 'if'.

With the site revamp coming soon it's 'criticality' slipped totally off the "Radar of Necessity"  .....
