Noisy MoBo fan

Like so many Asus A8N-SLi users before me, I been driven nuts the last few days by that cheap and nasty Asus Northbridge fan sounding a death rattle. For a few days it was noisy for the first few minutes after boot, but last night it decided to go for the full monty. It is almost impossible to use a pc with that kind of noise bruising your ears, so I switched to my backup pc.
There is plenty of info around on this, it is a common failing with this MoBo. The solution is just to replace it with something else. Not being in a position to do that right now, I tried something else - a few drops of bike oil (the silicone based variety). After ten minutes of running in, the fan is now as quiet as a mouse. In fact, I would say my pc is running quieter than it ever has.
I'll still be looking for a replacement, but for now, silence is golden

Never did get this fixed. It was so quiet I forgot about it, until a few days ago when it started being noisy again with my pc occasionally refusing to boot because the fan had stopped.
Couldn't find the bike oil, so it had a few drops of engine oil instead, 10/40 I think... works fine again

You should have gone with 5w 20w, maybe a synthetic blend, It's just a tad thinner.
