Bold Menu Text Issue - Fixed!

If this has been covered before, forgive me, but the menu backgrounds are not adjusting size to allow for bold text. This is true with WB5.x & persists with WB6. Is this something WB can address or an OS limitation? Bold text can look so much better in certain skins - I hope this is fixable.

far as I know the font being use can and will interfere with menu sizing, I haven't found a way around it anyway.

At least the gamma fix in the release version has fixed the menu & MDI button skinning problems I was having. On XP, BTW.

Is this also an issue on Vista? Just curious if MS took this into account when designing the new UI.

Have you tried this Daiwa?

I'm at work and doing this from memory without any Stardock, but Go to display properties, Advanced, Other Advanced Features if you're running Window Blinds and you probably are.

Then you merely drop down your Item Menu, select Menu and change your text to Bold, to a different font and size as well.

This is where I change my default text for my start menu and desktop icons as well!

Looks like anything over 12 point, even normal weight, is a problem.

Your reply set me to thinking. I decided to test a different theory before trying yours, and I think I got to the same place by a different route.

I set the System Menu Font in Fonts for Classic Widgets to the same font in bold (preceding the point size with a minus sign), reloaded the skin, et voila:





So, students, the menubackground sizes according to the classic text setting, not the skinned text setting.

Anyhoo, thats great, I guess I never really tooled with it too much I pretty much keep my fonts smaller and unbold. Good job nailing it down.

Those same properties apply to the use of SKS6 with Vista and every skin thus far I've seen does not seem to want to use it. Seems there is a missing concept for those fonts in SKS6. Thus you have to use notepad or like program to edit the ui file. But also if you look at the ui the actual settings for those fonts have some interesting qualities. Worth looking into if you are really going to design some hi-end WB's...

Thanks for the info & your PM. I'm sticking with 'the SKS5 I know' for now since I don't have access to a Vista rig for skin testing anyway. I believe Cp's suggestion would achieve the same result, though I have no idea how the equivalent of DP is setup in Vista.

Although it is cryptic as hell & took me a long time to cotton onto it, the Fonts for Classic Widgets section is obviously very helpful in avoiding just such display issues - I hope they put that section back in SKS6, not to mention a Code View editor.
