Do survey for Vista compression for icons??

Here I will like to have your opinion on Vista compression…
Is this really better??? What that changes it?
I carried out a small personal experience under Vista
I have to create an icon under photoshop (256+256), then I safeguard it in ico without Vista compression.
Then I open Axiaelis Iconworkshop and adds all the formats xp without compression in "ico 01" I then record with same the icon a "ico 2" compressed in Vista on size 256
At first sight no difference …
I then put them in a folder, with a large posting, that which is not compressed increased any more but into 128. It is thus smaller with the visual one
From where my question… For what is used this compression?
Is necessary it to use it?
