screenshot much smaller than uploaded

Hello,
I haven't uploaded a screenshot before, and I think I didn't do something right.
The file I uploaded is much larger than what shows when I hit to download, or click on the thumb.
I noticed that when I was uploading it, but thought it might be because it wasn't approved yet, or something.
I tried uploading a second time right then, and got the same results.
The image originally was 1024x600. I'm not sure what it is now, but it shows as less than a quarter of that size. I see large screenshots other people have uploaded, so I didnn't think the dimensions were an issue. The file size was under 500k, I don't know what other info to include here.
any thoughts?
