I've written a blogspot on selecting a widescreen monitor in the hope that it clears up some confusion about aspect ratio.

1600 is divisible evenly by 16.
180 is divisible evenly by 9
Ergo 1600x180 is widescreen profile?
it'd be seriously widescreen....

Have you ever seen a recommended resolution of 1600x180? Of course not.
So why do you invent such a rediculous argument?

1600x900: (1600/16=100 and 900/9=100) - quotients are the same
1440x900: (1440/16=90 and 900/9=100) - quotients are not the same

It uses exactly the mathematics/reasoning in your 'blog'
1600 IS divisible evenly by 16
and 180 is divisible equally by 9 therefore it is a 16:9 format....
That is a direct quote of your math....exaggerated to show its error.
Read post #1 .....second line.
1440/900 does NOT equate to a ratio of 16/9
It is a ratio, plain and simple....divide the height by 9 and multiply by 16 and you get the width.
Any number that does NOT result using that math is NOT 16/9.
The 16 equal parts horiz and 9 equal parts vert MUST, that is MUST be the same 'parts', otherwise it is NOT a ratio at all of 16/9.
If your 'training in video production' has led you to your error I'd very STRONGLY suggest you request a refund for that training, as it is flawed....
1440/900 is actually 14.4 to 9 ...

If you are going to do it....get it right.
1440x900 is NOT 16/9 profile.
Your mathematical approach is entirely wrong.
The correct check is...'are the resolutions proportional to 16/9, or in other words, is the width 16/9 times the height?'...
