grayhaired old woman needs help
simple explaination on how to zip wallpapers
Tuesday, June 12, 2007 by mschleisner | Discussion: Skinning
I guess some of my wallpapers are looking funny when I upload them and I don't know how to zip them in a winzip file. I was told my uploads need to be converted to jpgs. Thought that is what they are when I sent them. Guess thats why some have not made it to my site. http://mschleisner.wincustomize.com/skins.aspx
Thanks to anyone who can give a simple answer to an old woman who loves to take pictures. Thanks

Standard sizes (horizontal pixels x vertical pixels)
800x600, 1024x768, 1600x1200 most common, these are 4:3 ratio
1280x1024 (bastard size) the developer of which should be stripped naked covered with honey and staked out over an ant bed.......
1440x900, 1680x1050, 1920x1200 these are common widescreen sizes
There are others, but theses are by far the most common. I'd suggest providing 1920x1200, 1600x1200 & one of the little bastards for each wall to make everyone happy. It's ALWAYS better to reduce from a larger size than to "blow up" a smaller size because you'll lose definition. Do your previews in either 1024x768 or 800x600.
To zip files in XP, Right click on the file you want to zip and choose "Send To" > Compressed (zipped) Folder"
To unzip, double click on the file and drag out (or in) what you want.

why your comment and attitude? I am doing the best I can for a newby at this. Reply #6 Tuesday, June 12, 2007 5:32 PM
mschleisner ...the wallpaper gallery is for wallpapers, nothing else.
Yes, photographs can work as wallpapers, but as with any graphic medium not all work as well as others.
One definite reason for rejections will be when the image is NOT in desktop/screen resolution, eg, undersquare...that means taller than it is wide. No computer screen is in that proportion, so neither should any wallpaper upload be.
This applies to anyone/everyone just the same, so it is not 'rudeness', just reality/restrictions of the gallery.
When it comes to subject matter, it is a reality that truly personal photographs will only appeal to the uploader. Sites such as Deviantart.com have plenty of photographs of 'my pet fido' which generally hold no public appeal [as wallpapers] at all.
At this stage, on Wincustomize.com we have an option to relocate 'less successful' uploads to a person's 'Personal Page', however in the case of many people's photograph uploads [in particular] the ideal option would be to be able to relocate the uploads to one's 'Photo Gallery' which even by its very name is a more appropriate destination......where odd-proportioned photographs/images would not matter as they were not trying to be wallpapers.
There IS no 'attitude' in my comments....only an attempt to answer your query ...to help a 'newby at this' ....

Like I said in one of your other threads...use the subscriber photo album, it's for photos.
I've made good use of mine [link].Reply #9 Tuesday, June 12, 2007 8:31 PM
You can thank moderation for that fact. If you look at a site like Deviantart.com where there is basically no moderation you'll easily appreciate the difference. You have to wade through lots of trash to find that one or two worthwhile gems.
If your interested in photography, I'd suggest http://www.thephotoforum.com/ You'll find a lot of people willing to give tips and advice. You can post your entire photo library if you wish. From what I've seen you've got a "good eye" for picture content, so you might want to work on the technical aspects.

He's mot being rude. Really. I think it's his keyboard.
I have to say, it's times like this and comments like this that I regret having an email that forbids me from using certain likeness's and such of certain people. If it wasn't for my meds, I think my head would have exploded over not being able to photoshop something for that comment.

mschleisner ,
I think you have me confused with someone else. I haven't commented on any of your work, here or on the actual work.

For starters the 'wallpaper' gallery is for wallpapers, not odd-proportioned photographs. The images need to be a wallpaper/desktop proportion...eg one of the most common is 1024x768 pixels.
General happy-snap photographs of your holidays, etc should be uploaded to your 'photo gallery' on your personal page, where not wallpapers at all...
