Moving on to Vista
come on everybody

Personally, I'm kind of tired of seeing skins and icons made for XP and not Vista. Yes, I realize a lot of people still have XP. If we made less "stuff" for XP, maybe folks would be more willing to upgrade their systems. I know, I know...it costs $
I've moved on to a more advanced operating system. I need Windowblinds and icons for it!! Sure I have my old dusty XP disk standing by, just in case I really have problems with Vista. So far, I've had no real issues with the OS that I coulldn't fix myself. Most of the time it's my fault for messing things up and creating problems with my system, not the OS itself.
So, can we all just move on, buy Vista, and make some skins and icons for it??

Ive been using Vista for 2 or 3 years now. Ive not had any complaints other then boot time. But that was a system upgraded from 2000 > XP > Vista. So it had tons o garbage. I recently did a format finally and installed the 64 bit version. Its nice having 8 gigs of ram. I have yet to run out of memory and i play games, watch movies, graphics editing, level design. A lot of the time all at once. =D
After a couple of service packs, Vista is actually a pretty stable system and a lot of the complaints people had are gone. Its not a terrible OS, at least not as terrible as people out there would like you to believe.
Im making my first skin Vista only to begin with. Ill add XP support for it if there is enough demand for the skin when / if i eventually release it.

Vista is a very limited OS to skin, 7 I doubt will be any better..I myself make vista versions, but as soon as Im done.. back to XP I go.
In addition, for the skinner, its half or 2/3rd as much work again, for the same skin. Thats not taking into account 7 around now too.
Good news is you can always pick up a copy of SKS and make a usable Vista version of your own if it's eatin' at you that much

No....some of us CAN'T. It's not a matter of desire, it's a matter of financial commitments and living within our means. Four days ago I bought a laptop with Vista on it, but if I didn't need a computer to perform my job and bring home a paycheck, and if my old one wasn't on life support, there is no way I COULD "just move on and buy Vista" nor SHOULD I.
If Microsoft wants us upgrading operating systems like we go through toilet paper, they're going to have to be a lot less proud of their stuff, and bring the price down to $20. If skin downloaders want those of us who skin to upgrade, then their going to have to put together a donation fund toward their favorite skinner's upgrade. Barring all that from happening, I believe vStyler has the best advice -- skin it yourself if it's eatin' at you that much!

I've been using Vista now for 2 years come this November & really my only complaint has been USB external hard drive (slow shut down, file transfer etc.) I'm in no hurry to get 7, Vista suits me fine! Other factors involved of course, I just don't want to keep on upgrading and spending money on yet another system! I've been around since 3.1, completely missed windows 2000 and on reflection couldn't stand 95! I probably ran 98 the longest, XP was a real breakthrough though, that and broadband!

Yeah I know. 
As for Win7, ill probably grab it. Ive been reading nothing but positive stuff about it in terms of just the OS bit. Skinning isnt a priority to me for a system, but its always nice hehe.
Any yeah, its funny were in here with a topic thats pretty flipping old.

I've been using Win 7 since the beta, now the RC. I've already pre-ordered my copies!
I have actually installed the RC on an old, old computer that has only 512 Mb of ram!
(it's kinda slow, but it installed and runs!) The old GeForce4 MX 440 AGP graphics card
can't do Aero (or much else) so I ordered an 'upgrade' (GeForce 6200 512MB 64-bit GDDR2)
and more memory.

I agree with John 100% about the added work to make Vista and XP skins. When I was making just XP skins, it took me about 3-4 weeks to make the skin. Now that I also make Vista skins, the time is almost doubled, if I start from scratch (meaning I'm not doing an update to an existing XP skin). For example, I have started my Christmas skin....I have been working on it for 4 weeks already, and I don't even have Vista done...and I haven't even started the XP version yet!

Everyone's had more than two years to save up. Clearly you've managed your financial commitments and have been living within your means. Finally, you were able to afford Vista, which is wonderful. Now we're even making windowblinds and msstyles for Win7. Win7 was a $50 upgrade for many people. I have my copy coming in the mail. Good thing Stardock makes Windowblinds7 for XP/Vist/Win7. Of course, I'd like to see Windowblinds7 for Win7 only and could care less about XP/Vista! XP/Vista users can keep the old Windowblinds6.

Windows 7 is a good way to go. recently upgraded my XP to vista and i'm having no problems with it.
