WHY was the thread locked?

Tuesday, May 29, 2007 by PoSmedley | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Why was the 'Does anyone read the rules ?' thread locked?

What happened to no more locking threads?

What happened to all that was said, not 4 months ago?

The point is we WANT people to be able to have different opinions.

But here's the point: In an OPEN community such as ours, we have the right to disagree. Do I make myself clear: You have the right to an opinion and someone else has the right to disagree with your opinion.

I think you have every right to voice your concern.

the point isn't whether I agree or not, it is that we have an atmosphere where people feel free to voice their opinions

We want to have a community site in which people are free to *discuss* issues that concern them

close the site before I'd allow it to become a place where only "valuable members" get to have a say on how the site is run.

If someone disagrees with a policy of the site, a decision of the moderators, or has a problem with a user, let it be discussed civily and openly without someone commanding others to adhere to their demands lest they take their things and go. Because that time is over now.

There was a conversation taking place. At the very least, some people got to blow off steam, but it was a conversation with no threats that we were told we could have openly and freely in the forums.

in Boss's defense, he has helped me on a few occasions - we all have our bad days, this could be just one of those days for him - lord knows I have enough of them myself. I hate seeing this kind of stuff happen on this site; Z71 has stopped participating in the forums recently because of a few discussions that went off on a tangent, I would hate to see Boss leave or reduce his involvement in the forums because of the same thing.

A rewind & edit button would be perfect right about now.

Just my 0.02 cents cdn

Neither is open discussion, nor even simple argument/disagreement

So, you're stating, for Brad, that we can forget what he said about not locking threads. It will always be at the discretion of whoever has access to that button to decide when it is or isn't a flame fest and end it? (Keeping in mind that the thread he unlocked before he said there would be no more locking wasn't much different than this one) And THAT is what we can count on from now on, not what we were told back in February along with all the stuff I posted at the start of this?

we all have our bad days,

While I will agree with that...who doesn't...it doesn't give anyone license to use foul language or attack anyone in the forums...If someone can't deal with their bad days maybe they need to back away from the keyboard and get some professional help with anger management.

I've had some pretty rotten days lately and never once have I considered lashing out at anyone in the forums because of it...its called life...and some people need to get a grip on that. Just because someone may have been a boyscout in the past doesn't give them the right to behave badly in the future.

Po...I don't need to state anything 'for Brad'....he's quite able to do that himself, eloquently, too...

Perhaps an alternative was to leave the thread open but gag anyone who engaged in personal attack.  You'd probably find much the same result, terminated communication.

Should we as admins/mods both accept being insulted/disparaged whilst doing our best to avoid giving others the opportunity to publicly self-destruct..... all in the same thread?

It seems like we are damned either way....

Admins/mods are obliged NOT to have 'bad days' as an excuse for conduct.....so it is only fair that the general community does not have that as an 'excuse' either.

Okay.

https://forums.wincustomize.com/?forumid=144&aid=145947&p=3#1154568 -Post 108

That is another thing that will not be happening as much. I do not think it is okay for people to just close threads when a discussion is deemed "done" by some moderator.

Closing threads should only happen if the discussion has competely devolved into a flame fest which isn't going to happen in this thread (since I'd have no problem enforcing the no personal attacks rule directly).

I was wrong. He never said that he would never lock a thread again.

I was wrong. I apologize. So, I will just say this.

To those who just want to disturb shit and hurl insults and flame.....

You are the ones who give them an excuse to close the thread. When the thread is closed, any chance of getting to a specific point if it has yet to be reached is over. You either want changes, answers, or solutions, or you just want to stir things up. If it's the latter, you're screwing things up for everyone else.

To everyone else..if they flame, hurl attacks, etc..hit the 'Report This Reply' button and let the mods handle it so the thread doesn't get shut down. If we don't, we lose.

I'm sorry for the misquote.

When I have a bad day I totally go off the deep end and insult anyone who gets in my way, then I pour boiling oil all over them then I take my zippo and tazer gun (for good measure).. and...then I wake up and realize I didn't go that route in the first place because Zubaz got to me in time.

Hell, everyone flies of the handle sometime's, I'd gladly shake Boss's hand right now and say, It's all good my man.    Wasn't the first time I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and needless to say it wont be the last.

I'm a lover not a fighter.. Peace on earth and good will to all men. (..and i truly mean that.)

Jafo, sorry for pushing you on an issue I was wrong on...and to everyone else. You make valid points, as usual. I see things as wishy washy and more as a matter of what is convenient for whomever at the time happening here. Maybe I am too black and white in my thinking,,,and expecting all or nothing is unrealistic. Maybe wanting some answers is to.

I go back and look at the thread link in post #27 for the first time in a while and see how a lot of stuff goes unanswered or addressed. The flamers get responses. The ones who just want to disturb things do, but a lot of truly legitimate questions are left alone. A lot. I see I should have known then I was just wasting my energy. I'm a slow learner, I guess, which is why I still haven't made a wb.

I'm done. I give up. I'm just gonna go about my own business quietly and won't put you or anyone else through my shit again.

on that note. maybe an honorarium for those members who go above and beyond the typical user in helping police the librarys...sort of a kudo for those non admins who dedicate their time to helping keep WC rip free...a thanks from the community for thier efforts... like "Rip Stopper" or something...

just a thought...

Po' you make it sound like wearing your heart on your sleeve and speaking your mind is a bad thing, don't ever stop - heck I wish I could be half as brave.

Human nature dictates that people will not agree on every subject and that arguments & debates will unfortunately happen - you can't stop that and you probably wouldn't want to even if you could or things like creativity, spark, imagination & free will would bite the dust.

I would just hope that at the end of the day, (week, month, etc.) that we all shake hands with the person we disagree with and appreciate that differences will always exist between people because we're all individuals. We're entitled to our ideas & opinions and we should hold strong those viewpoints that we think are important but also accept that others are entitled to the same thing.

HG I like your idea, I would support it,
I've reported a couple of wb skin rips in the past, acknowledgement for the effort would be a good thing and sends a message to the users of the site that it's user base also takes a hand in preventing rips.

On a side note V & Jack, I can't help but think that we had this discussion on tooting in another forum, something about Tootie & the Blowfish, "Hold my hand!" .... RIP! (or was it pull my finger)

All I have left to say is I felt locking the thread without warning was wrong. Had there been a warning that if the personal attacks continued it would be locked then I could understand it. I had wanted to reply to Vstyler when he had stated :

I think both sides should relax, seems like the mods are doing the best they can given what they have to work with and perhaps everyone shouldnt get in such a tizzy over rips, I can understand if it affecting you financially, in most , if not all cases it is not. Fairyy, if WC doesn't seem that concerned with it, then why kill yourself over it.?

All I had wanted to say was I do not feel reporting Rips " Killing " myself at all.
Why do I report them ? Because I should. Its everyone's responsibility to report when they see someone using the work of others. When someone spends hour upon hour making a wall then 2 days rendering it and others just help themselves - its wrong.
Its no different if I were surfing about and ran into one of your windowblinds at another site and it had someone else's name attached to it. I'm sure you'd want me to make it known that it was a rip.
I'm not sure why the other thread took such a bad turn..but there is an undercurrent of resentment that should be addressed...not stifled.

Po' you said nothing wrong and do not ' give up ' many people do want to hear what you have to say ..

That was one point I was trying to make. While I agree 100% that rips should be reported privately so as not to accuse an innocent person...but if all the talk of RIPS is done behind the scenes then more users are apt to try and slip rips by thinking that no one is really watching or caring.
