Help Fight Global Poverty!

You can make a big huge difference

Saturday, May 26, 2007 by Spartan | Discussion: Internet

I want to let you all know about a cool non-profit that is doing great things: Kiva.org

Kiva.org allows individuals to make $25 loans or more to low-income entrepreneurs in the developing world (microfinance). By doing so, individuals like you provide affordable working capital for the poor (money to buy a sewing machine, livestock, etc.), empowering them to earn their way out of poverty.

It's a new, direct and sustainable way to fight global poverty, and the way I see it, I get a higher return on $25 helping someone build a future than the interest my checking account pays.

Anyways, if you have a minute, please check out the site: kiva.org.

If you need more "reputable" validation than my recommendation, know that they have received great press in publications ranging from The Wall Street Journal to NPR to BusinessWeek. Moreover this week it was featured on CNN's Heroes program.

Thanks for reading!

NP. Shoot I also sent an email to SD staff informing them about it. I hope they decide to actively support Kiva and given what I know of Brads nature I think SD will champion the cause.

Additionally the Kiva site has almost no graphic resources so I was thinking maybe this community could provide skins, gadgets and desktops for Kiva members to download from those more artistically inclined amongst us.

This looks very good on the surface. I hope it is a genuine and an honest organisation, because if it is, it can do a lot of good.

(One thing though I would not give a blue arsed penny to Africa, Africa the bottomless pit, she just never pulls herself out of the trash can.)

Anyone reading this can lend ME $25.00 and do it directly, without losing a dime of your contribution in administrative costs.

I live in the 'developing' part of Richmond, VA, where crime, poverty and ignorance reign supreme. I am also disabled. I'd love some help starting my own business.

I live in the TX Panhandle where the median income is about $23,000 a year. I, too, would like to be considered for your loan program. And I have a helluva good business plan to go with.

There is a community that basically serves domestic loan needs of people that is just as good as Kiva. The difference for it is that the lenders actually make the interest from the loan. Whereas with Kiva the local partner does.

The site url is: prosper.com
