Vista License Sales in Context

On Tuesday MS released sales figures of 40 million licenses for Vista.
Yesterday a post here about that press release brought out the same questions that have been there for awhile. What is really in those sales figures? How does it compare to the release of XP considering the increase in total computers in the world? The post here also mention that nearly 14% of traffic on WinCustonize was attributed to Vista. I would be interested is knowing or seeing what went into making up that 14%. Is it strictly forum posts or does it include uploads and downloads of Vista skins?
If MS, in my thinking, drop the word sales and only talked about the total amount of licenses released it would be taken as fact without review or questions.
