changing password symbols

I was wondering if anyone knew how to change the symbols that appear when you type a password on the logon screen and also on Mozilla (on the logon screen it is those little circles, and on Mozilla it is the stars). I while ago I think I was able to change them but I can't seem to remember now. Thanks much.
