Depending on the software you use, different effects will emerge. Your software should offer a text Anti-Aliasing tool which smoothens text like XP's ClearType, but much smoother.
I use Adobe Photoshop, it has the following modes of smoothing:
> None
> Sharp
> Crisp
> Strong
> Smooth
Most programs have their own way of doing this.
