Microsoft DreamScene shown at CES

Tonight at CES Microsoft announced the DreamScene Ultimate Extra.
DreamScene is a new feature designed for Windows Vista Ultimate users that enables them to display high-definition video content as their desktop background.
Users of Windows Vista Ultimate will be able to download it from "Ultimate Extras". Moreover, Microsoft has tapped WinCustomize.com as the premier repository for DreamScene content distribution and content by end users. The gallery and landing page will officially go live by the time Windows Vista Ultimate becomes generally available.
Stardock Design produced all of the non-photographic based DreamScene content. In addition, Stardock has been developing enhancements and tools to extend the capabilities of Windows DreamScene.

It's just a question of time before Apple rips this off, call it something cool and then people will say it's a good idea. Is it a good idea, not sure, I need to see it. But congrats to Stardock for their job on it.

It provides an exciting opportunity. The trick will be to create a loop that will not bore you to death in short order. Repetitive motion can make you crazy before your time. I look forward to the challenge.

Sounds cool -will definitely try it out.I know with you guys involved it will have some great content. Did they say when it would come out as an ultimate extra - it's not available as of today so far?

Thanks Dark-Star, I missed the windowsultimate.com launch. I voted for DreamScene in the poll also. The site answers my previous question - Jan. 30 will be the launch date for Ultimate app's.

I feel like I just can't catch up. It's like when WB went to wb5 and I had to go get a new video card to be able to take advantage of all the new features.
This Vista thing with the animated walls...it's just too cool. Who wouldn't want it? But I have to really say that MS sucks for putting Vista into so many packages and making this feature available only on the high end package. I'll even go further by saying I bet they are 'thrilled' that WC is getting so involved. They get free promotion of this feature and get to push this high-end version of Vista on the millions who visit WC and it ain't costing them a cent.
I wish I could get a handle on the DX scripts. It's all martian to me. But, I am sure there is a way to do something similar or pretty close in DX with swf files. I would like to see WC do something on this level...or someone figure out how, as an alternative for those of us who will be riding out our copies of XP until we 'have' to break down and get Vista.
I was going to hold off as long as I could on buying Vista. Now, it's been made even more tempting, which I am sure is how it's supposed to be. I will also have to get a new computer. The worst part of all of this is, that by the time I do...and get a solid handle on Vista and all it's little extra's, they will probably be launching the next level of Windows.

I agree that Stardock is in an interesting place because of their partnership with MS.
For years SD was able to make "lesser" versions of Windows look like more recent ones. Win95 could look like XP (or any other OS). Will the continued partnership mean that a product that SD might have been able to sell to Vista Home Basic users to make it act like Vista Ultimate are now off the market?
Does the partnership now preclude competition between MS and SD?

I'm not sure that 'competition' would be the right word to describe MS/SD....'symbiosis' would be closer...

How about 'parasitic', since MS will be feeding off all the free publicity they will get for this from WC/SD. Not too mention the workload they have freed themselves. I imagine they will direct people to the WC site for tutorials and info, etc. Sure, it's good for Stardock, too...but I imagine if SD came out with something similar, MS may not have 'tapped' them to begin with if they felt there was a conflict. Completely out of my area, but I wonder if MS made/asked SD to agree NOT to pursue anything similar in order to be a part of this.
I think about all the people who may get basic Vista and decide to upgrade if they want this feature that MS calls 'free'. If you upgrade or buy Ultimate from the start to get this, you are still paying for this 'free' feature. I don't mean to sound hateful. I just don't like the way MS operates.

And really Po' is MS going to get that much more publicity from being linked to WC? I'll bet that SD (and ODNT subscriptions) being linked to from MS (http://windowsultimate.com/) will generate more new business for SD than the other way around.
MS is pretty clear about what you get with each version. No one is being fooled here.
