ok i have a "making a bootskin Problem" again

This time it is about color

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 by Bash2cool | Discussion: OS Customization

its been a VERY long time since i made a bootskin.

Now i made a bootskin and it is ready to be sent to this site with the exception of one problem.

i used photoshop to convert my image to a 16-bit image but i cant save it as a .BMP file.

If i can't do that then the bootskin software won't regonize the skin i made. And the image has to be a .bmp anyway.

How can i make my image into a 16-bit .bmp image file?

tell me if you guys use a certain type of software for that.................or just HELP ME!!!!!!!!

Please?

Bootskin's have to be 4-bit (16 colors).

First you have to convert it to 4-bit (not 16-bit)...Image > Mode > Indexed Color...after you have done this, Save AS...name.bmp > click save > then Choose 4-bit > click ok.

*edit* this is for Photoshop CS2...I'm assuming you know the indexed color settings.

Don't confuse '16 bit' with '16 colour'.

'16 colour' is '4 bit'.....

make your pic

load it into irfanview, drop it to 4bit, save it as a bmp

load it back into ps, touch up using only the colors left in that 4bit pallette

Irfanview is a free graphics viewer that will allow you to convert the image.

P.S. is Photoshop. But you're problem is probably with the way you're setting up your image.

Once you click Indexed color, you should then use the "Palette" drop-down menu to switch the image to "Local (Perseptive, Selective, Adaptive)..I personally favor adaptive for most images. Then make sure under "colors" it says 16, if not change it to 16. Now the "forced" option should be "black and white" if not switch it. Diffusion doesn't matter, so whatever you choose is fine. Click ok and your set.

File > Save As... > choose bitmap then click save, and on the next dialog box, under teh "depth" section, check 4-bit.

If you do as I have just described and it still doesn't let you save as a .bmp, I would contact Adobe and ask for a refund becuase there is something seriously wrong with the software.
