This is great software for editing many types of audio files, and it's free. This is a beta release, so as always take care when downloading.
"Audacity is a free audio editor that can record sounds, play sounds, import and export WAV, AIFF, and MP3 files, and more. Use it to edit your sounds using Cut, Copy, and Paste (with unlimited Undo), mix tracks, or apply effects to your recordings. It also has a built-in amplitude envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode, and a frequency analysis window for audio analysis applications. Built-in effects include Bass Boost, Wahwah, and Noise Removal, and it also supports VST plug-in effects."

I like Audacity very much. I have used it to create small sound effects for use in widgets and as system sounds, but also to create new and complex sound effects for the local community theater (my thunderstorms are always a big hit!). It is extensible, too, so there are many handy plug-ins available to help you get things done. Audacity is one of my favorite open source apps.

I use it as a multi-track recorder on Linux. I have drum machine software. Usually I have a drum track, bass, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, and vocals. I'm a one man band!
