Hard to kill...

Monday, July 24, 2006 by TYCUS | Discussion: Windows XP

when u make a virus or spyware scan on your system and u find out that there is a file that can't be delete it, what is the first thing that you do? do u start looking for a better spy/virus scanner.., right?

well i find out a better and easier way to kill that kind files

a good option is to make a scan during the safe mode: start your system > immediately press F8 > select the option "Safe Mode" > make a spyware/virus scan and delete the file.

btw, this kind of scans(during the safe mode) are faster.

NOTE: not all spyware and virus softwares run during the safe mode, the ones that i use are BitDefender and Ad-Aware(from Lavasoft).

Good suggestion. I used to run all my utilities in safe mode but a lot of software these days won't run. It's nice to know some still work ok

A useful program for those files that still won't go away is Unlocker. You know, the ones where you get the pop up error message that says:

Cannot delete file: Access is denied
There has been a sharing violation.
The source or destination file may be in use.
The file is in use by another program or user.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

The software is free and a no brainer to use. Get it at

I usually run most security programs in safe mode. There has only been 1 file I have never been able to get rid of. Not in safe mode, not in regular windows. I have downloaded countless programs to try and trash the file, but nothing works. Its a Zlob (I think) trojan downloader and currently I just have my zonealarm blocking the file. Its been on my system for months, but zonealarm has entirly disabled it. No problems since I have blocked it.

So I will check out that "unlocker" program and pray that it gets rid of the thing @_@. Thanks for the link Sea Horse.

I feel silly now . I couldn't get rid of it cause its part of the explorer.exe file . At least the program cleared that up for me lol. (And now AVG doesn't class it as a virus . Must have been a false positive... hmm)

Quick question...

I have some registry keys that refuse to be removed. Some invaled file extentions, and activeX objects... anything that can bypass permissions in the registry and trash these?
