Standardizing WinCustomize Forums

Beta testing forums.wincustomize.com

Tuesday, May 16, 2006 by T-Man | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

We are working standardizing WinCustomize's forums.  What I mean by that is that with all the Stardock websites we are working on one code base that will run all our forums.  Several of our sites (forums.galciv2.com, forums.stardock.com, forums.societygame.com, etc) already use the same forum code.  But current WinCustomize has it's own custom flavor.  So we are getting close to completing this transormation over at https://forums.wincustomize.com/ . If you feel like beta testing it for us then please start having a look around and let us know of any bugs or missing features or inconsistencies it has compared to the current forums.

Please do not turn this into a wish list, that will come later.  After we get the current forums converted over we are going to look into revamping the forums to have a more similar look to all the generic forums out on the web.

Sir Lantec - What are you trying to say? PLEASE be as descript as possible when reporting issues.

the 'honorifics' are missing from user names...

also, after adding a comment, when you hit submit, you are taken to the top of the post, rather than the bottom...

User names aren't bold.
Jafo: click "more" to get the sticky posts.

The footer reads "Copyright © 1995- Stardock.net" a little old, I think.
Spacing seems to be quite off everywhere.
The Edit Comment and New Post screen has a transparent background.

further to my earlier post #22, when returning to a thread you have visited, you are taken to the top of the post, rather than the last post you read...

Honorifics are not part of the forum reply system any longer. They may be added again in the future.

i can see the post 'WindowFX update' in the 'recent forum activity' box, but it doesn't appear in the 'OS Customization' forum box on the main forum index page...

it appears correctly in the normal Wincustomize forum

I was unable to start a thread from the beta forum, but easily started the same thread from the old forum page. On the beta page I got the following error message after pressing Create Post button:

There was an error with your request. Please try again.

Tried several times, but got the same message

Mr Big Stuff Andrew,
I get a "Error attaching event to form" when I open a page in the new forum (that's pic 1) I also see a red band behind the comment box (that's pic 2) I'm using Opera 8.54 and the particulars for this release are in pic 3. Hope that helps. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but duty called.

Not reporting an error unless you consider it an error in judgement but I really, REALLY do not like the advertisements stuck into the threads. I hope this is something meant for the non-subscriber/non-customer forum users. Even if that's the case it's feature that makes me avoid other sites and I can see it having a detrimental effect here.

Also, it looks as if my previous error reports have been cleared up.

While I do appreciate the dedication to site improvements like this, I for one cant help but wonder...
Wouldn't it be nice if the main site actually WORKED properly so that we can take advantage of the upgrades. C'mon, this site has been hideous in reliabilty for far too long now.

Thanks for the reports guys, I'll be working on them. Phoon, please try to stay on topic. This thread is dedicated to finding and eliminating bugs on the beta WC Forums.

Testing to see if I can post images in Firefox. I am currently unable to post images in either Firefox or IE.

The Icons next to the forums topic title does not seem to update properly. For instance, there was one with a closed envelope that denotes that the thread was not read. I read it and it took many minutes and many reloads to change. Another thread had the envelope open but a letter sticking out notifying that the thread had a new unread message within it. Well, the last one posted was myself. So I read it, waited, many minutes and reloaded many times, yet it does not change.

Also, is it possible to get an icon to represent the sticky. Some have what seems to look like a html link image (white page with just an "e" on it) but some do not have this and are obviously sticky's by the replied time in comparison to the ones below it.

If this wasn't clear enough let me know.

I'm sorry. I had both forums open and was trying to see if one would update and not the other on the Icons and so got confused on the stickys. As noted above there are no stickys in the new ones. The rest of the above post remains the same.

The main forum listing no longer contains sticky posts (see explanation to Jafo above). Click on the forum name in the header or the 'More' button to see a full list.

We did this for a reason, as for some forums there were more sticky posts than we could reasonably display and it was preventing people from seeing the actual user posts that were coming in new. So far, this has been met with warm acceptance by most.

I just made an update that should resolve several issues.

Island Dog, I see your image just fine.

Great. I have not been able to post images in a while, and I could never do it in Firefox since becoming a mod.

Also, I have no mod controls in my section.
