Desktop icons solid background + no text shadow...

I don't want to have to run WindowFX just for the sake of fixing that!

Overview: I had never been able to figure out why I couldn't get transparent background and a text shadow back on my desktop icons after they mysteriously vanished, then I found out WindowFX could help me solve my problem. But...

Problem: I don't want to be loading WindowFX every time Windows starts just for the use of this one function. Does anyone know anyway of setting WinXP (Pro) to do this? It does it by default but I can't figure out how to get it working again.

Thanks in advance!

control panel (classic view) - system - advanced tab > settings - visual effects - scroll down and see if use drop shadow for icon text is checked (next to last one down in XP home)
