Tiles: DirectDraw vs GDI??

Tuesday, February 28, 2006 by Emmitt_Nervend | Discussion: WindowFX

I gotta give FX3Beta some serious lovin!

My system is an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (actual speed: 2Ghz) overclocked to 2.2ghz (the same as a 3800+), on an Asus AV8Deluxe, 1GB DDR3200 Dual channel CAS2, all timings and voltages set to AUTO except for CPU. CPU OC'ed using 10% "adaptive overclocking" (which I've NEVER found an good online explanation of). ATI AllInWonder 3600XT (128MB, stock timings) feeding dual Dell 19" LCDs, 1280x1024 32bit 60hz. Not a "state-of-the-art/bleeding edge" system, and I'm not a gamer, so no upgrades for a few months, when I might swap the CPU for dual-core 4500+.

Even without a "state-of-the-art/bleeding edge" system I have almost every feature in FX3 turned on. In fact, the only FX3 features I'm NOT using: Taskbar Previews (using ObjectDock+...no taskbar); Desktop Icons changes (using IconX); App Transparency; Maximize size limits. So far (a week or so) no more slowdowns or instability than I normally have in XP.
In other words, everything is copacetic.

After all that, my question is simple: What is the difference between using DirectDraw vs the 2 GDI modes to display the tiles? I can't see any difference in speed or quality. What am I not seeing?

Keep up the good work, dudes and dudettes!
