New classic gaming is catching on

Classic gaming is growing in popularity, I found a new gaming website that through software downloads you can play long lost game dating back to 1981. The software is called emulator which is a program for a computer, or other computing device, that can emulate a video game console or handheld, so a computer can be used to play games that were created for that console or to develop games for that console. Such tools are often used to translate games into other languages, to modify (or hack) existing games, or to produce homebrewed demos. Console emulation can also be achieved between consoles (hence cross-console emulation), making a modern video game console emulate a less advanced one. I'd say classic games have been a big thing for awhile, there was a large array of Super Nintendo emulators available many many years ago for instance, which is great for classics like Chrono Trigger and others. They do take a bit of work and research to get through game-specific glitches and issues however.
Also Windows has been less and less backwards compatible with every iteration, but there are some good DOS emulators such as http://dosbox.sourceforge.net that'll let you run just about any DOS title - though your PC has to be pretty beefy and you may need to do some tweaking to get a good FPS. I've been able to run Master of Magic with it, but I had to switch to a different emulation mode to get good performance. There's a fix for X-Com UFO defense somewhere on the net that allows it to run under XP also, but it's been too long for me to remember where; sourceforge is probably a good place to check around.
http://www.the-underdogs.org/ is a pretty good place to get 'abandonware' titles. They don't have everything, and some things they once had have been removed because IP holders showed up and raised a fuss.
There's also more recent games that still have a highly accessible retro style to them, such as ROGUE-likes. My personal favorite in that genre would be Ancient Domains of Mystery, basically a fast turn-based RPG. (http://www.adom.de/)
