Without seeing the problem, it's hard to say. Check the transparency and translucency options if its a .png or .tga and uncheck translucency if it is a .bmp. Also check the remaining properties for the images to be sure that the translucency switch turned on.
Did you adjust any of the button settings?
Are you sure the images are assembled correctly? Do they have mouseover states?
any other info?
