these water type images usually render down to 16 colors nicely without too much detail loss if the image is first converted to black & white or sepia,
I may release this bootskin in another color (maybe blue, purple, or orange) - any requests?

google images is a great way to search for specific images, alot of the time I can't use the entire image so I crop the image to use what works, the rest is discarded, also alot of the time the images aren't that big so you have to blow up an image from an original size of say 300x300 (just an example) to 640x480, sometimes enough detail is retained from blowing up an image and I decide to use it, most of the time it doesn't work out so you have to search for something else. Water imagery is great, no shortage of water pics on the net. One of my recently released bootskins (blue water bubbles) is actually a small corner of a larger image of water at a river bed which included rocks, grass, trees, etc. I cropped everything out of the image except for the water bubbles & foam forming over the rocks, enlarged that section, converted it to black & white and then adjusted the color hue/saturation to give me an image in the color blue. Sometimes the results turn out ok, sometimes you have to start over again but it's worth trying out: blowing up photos and using certain parts of an enlarged photo can sometimes produce a wicked bkgrnd image - I definitely recommend it! One thing to add is to give credit to an artist if you plan on using their work, ask for their permission (example check out my recent Abstraction XP bootskin, original artwork by Skinhit, permission given by Skinhit), or look for wallpapers that are intended for general use and are freely available on the internet so that you don't have to worry about including permissions or contacting the artist, also don't use images with watermarks on them - it's a dead giveaway that you've used someone else's art meant for resale - it isn't cool and it doesn't look that great on the bootskin. Fonts can also be used to create awesome bootskins, you can download lots of interesting fontstyles from http://www.dafont.com
I've given away a few of my secrets, does any one else have any tips on creating bootskins, I'd be interested in hearing them!

Skinhit, it's pro's like you that really contribute to the skinning community,
it's newbies like us that get interested in windows skinning (in all of it's forms) in the first place because of the work that you have contributed.
I've only been a member of wincustomize since the end of august this year, viewing other people's profiles - there are alot of people who have been involved in some form of windows customization for several years! (Blows my mind that I was so naive that I didn't have a clue that these types of sites even existed and have done so for quite a long time.)
Mastering Bryce still seems like a world away from me - artists like yourself that use Bryce to create your artwork need to be applauded, you practically need a degree in engineering to work that software and to produce results that as breathtaking as the images that I've seen on this site. Also, I really think windowsblinds are super cool, I have to give alot of respect to those who actually create windowsblinds skins, I've been trying lately and the results have been less than stellar (mind you I haven't ponied up for the full version of skinstudio yet).
This is really an amazing site, the fact that people from all over the world come to download everyone else's work, to provide feedback on peoples work and to be members & part of a skinning community, that is truly impressive. When you consider the amount of turmoil that exists in certain regions of this planet, you find users at this site from everywhere and they're all unified because they all enjoy the ability & benefits of windows customization in all it's varied forms. That's the part that impresses me.
(... that and the fact that bootskins seem to be very popular these days )
