help with email notification

Alright I'm using the Tronix theme (it uses DesktopX) as my current pc's theme. And I don't know how to make it so that the email notification will tell me when I have a new email. I think the problem is that I have a gmail account, and you need more then just the pop server, username, and password. I don't have any knoledge os scripting or anything, so I was wondering if someone oculd tell me how to make it so it'll notify me when I have a new email. And I know that I'm getting emails because I'll log in to my account and there'll be new emails.
