New software release

I just finished a first release of new program; DeskMount. It will mimic some behavior known from MacOS and Linux etc. : When you insert/attach a new storage medium, a shortcut will be created on the desktop automatically. Remove the medium, and the shortcut will disappear. It was written in C#, and a free version is downloadable at http://www.blackbit.net/freeware/deskmountlite.msi

The program does not mess with your own shortcuts, and if are free to customize the drive icon using iconpackager. The new icon WILL be remembered properly. I would like some suggestions on how to improve the program. Thanks in advance

Here is what the full version will do so far:
- Customized media labels
- Support for drives other than CD-Roms
- Autorun support for USB drives etc.
- Faster refresh speed


You will need the .NET framework 1.1 for this to work!

So, does it create an actual desktop icon, or does it emulate an icon by overlaying an picture on your desktop?

It creates a temporary shortcut. You can customize the drive's using iconpackager or similar, and the shortcut's icon will automatically be the same.

Cool! Well, except for the .NET requirement. I can recall that there used to be quite some demand for this type of behaviour (not on this site though). So it should be quite popular.

I chose for the .NET framework, as more and more .NET software is becoming available. While .NET framework programs might load slower than a conventional program at first, they load quite a lot faster when a few of them are running already (as parts of the framework are already prelinked in memory). Further, it means that when the next version of the framework arrives (in the near future), the program can take advantage of new accellerated functions. Personally, I think that using the .NET framework will prove to be an advantage in the future.

P.S. : Any idea where I should post this program? Is there a site where people would want this?

No need to defend the use of frameworks, I just don't like them.

Yes, Virtual Plastic should like that.

On the framework note: with Longhorn .NET 2 frameework will be preinstalled, so people won't have to download the large download.
