Virtual Desktops 2

Friday, March 4, 2005 by cmuggle | Discussion: Life, the Universe and Everything

In the news release for the Beta for Virtual Desktops 2 it mentions "...Each desktop can have its own wallpaper (and it doesn't slow down switching at all - no other program that we know of has managed to be able to have per desktop wallpapers and not slow down the changing, we figured out a way)...".

In XP, I have found out how to set the desktop wallpapers, but they only show up as bitmap backgrounds in the BandVWM but not as the actual desktop wallpaper for each desktop. The actual desktop wallpaper is the same for all windows. Is that the way it is supposed to be? Or, will the desktop wallpaper eventually be different for each virtual window (like in the Desktop Manager MS Powertoy)?

Also, I have had issues when opening up Windows Explorer in one window and going to another window to do something and when I return to the window with Windows Explorer running it has disappeared. Any ideas...

I have been a long time user of BandVWM in its prior iterations and really like it. I had been using it recently within RightClick until this Beta release came out.

Please advise...

Can't reproduce your problems here - it's working as advertised for me.

The only time I've had issues where wallpaper wasn't changing was because I had locked the desktop (don't remember doing it but there you go...)

Display Properties->Desktop->Customize Desktop->Web->Lock Desktop Items

YMMV of course!

Thanks Chris...I didn't have my Lock Desktop Items checked, but I also didn't have Show Desktop Items checked either. When I checked 'Show Desktop Items' that did the trick!

I use RightClick and have a Desktop folder embedded in there so I don't have to display my desktop icons.

This problem emphasizes how badly RightClick needs to have a 'Hide Desktop Icons' option just like ObjectBar! Please!
