Browsing/Searching Dreams

Friday, January 8, 2016 by rabidcicada | Discussion: DeskScapes

I may misunderstand something about dreams, but, I was expecting to be able to browse in a much easier fashion.  It seems like the primary mode of searching is intended to be:

Set the top search bar filter to "dreamscapes"

Type in words and hope that the dreamscape has those words in the title itself

This misses a lot of potential wallpapers and dreams when the title is something unintuitive like "Dragons Ire" and it has a Dragon attacking a knight.  And you were looking for a wallpaper with a knight in it.  Is there the possibility of adding a tag system like http://stackoverflow.com/or linkedin where metadata tags are associated with each wallpaper/dream?  That way artists or users could label the contents more appropriately and "fuzzily"?

I was expecting to see more categories to filter from.  I only see about 7 including "abstract", which covers a huge amount of things.  I think this is a limitation brought about by the lack of an in depth categorization/tagging system above.  But it certainly doesn't filter it down well and leaves you wondering what else is around?  I can only sort by 3 methods and "less popular" and "older" ones are buried deep no matter how many results per page I select.

I ask all these things as a new purchaser of Object Desktop (primarily for Deskscapes and Fences) and was quickly dissapointed with my ability to find via a smooth process.

I'm looking for general comments about a better method of searching, or notes that I've overlooked a good method for drilling down, or comments from the site creators about "features coming ".  Please anyone....tell me there's a better way..

Dreamscapes don't exist. They're .dreams for use with the program DeskScapes.

At the search box, top right. Hit the dropdown menu and choose the DeskScapes icon. Then type in what you are searching for, then click the searchglass button.

"older" ones are buried deep no matter how many results per page I select.

tip:

After you click to go to the 2nd page, you'll see this in your brower address bar:

https://www.wincustomize.com/explore/dream#/page/2

Replace the ending "2" with say "50", hit enter, and you'll jump to page 50.  You might have to re-highlight the entire address to get it to work, might depend on the browser.

Also, if you come across a particular artist you're interested in you can have pretty good luck searching for the artist.

I appreciate the feedback Dave.  The point was to be able to better browser categorically.  But I'm getting that that's not a priority for Stardock since they've already sold the software.  I do agree searching by artist is nice....but what I really want is the ability to say "cats" and get all art that's been tagged as having cats regardless of if it happens to be in the title.  I gave the example I did to highlight exactly that gap.

Punching in page number is indeed a workaround for the currently deficient system.

I'm seeing a lot of non-response as the standard from Stardock in general about features like this on these forums.  Am I asking in a poor manner...or is it policy to not respond?

I think that's a nice idea for searching, but WinCustomize currently doesn't have the ability to use or have tags when people submit skins.

I would definitely like something like that though for the future.

I'm not understanding you. Stardock hasn't sold DeskScapes.

Just to highlight the gap again, so that perhaps it will get some dev love:

I guess I have to trudge through 73 pages * 60 dreams to find ones I like:).  And I'm kindof forced to just remember/download-immediately all the ones I might like.  Because I can't pragmatically go back at a later date and search for "robots" .

In all seriousness thanks for the .dreams and fences.  I appreciate them, but the "finding good dreams" process is hampered right now.
