Navigating the site

Saturday, April 13, 2013 by annagram615 | Discussion: WinCustomize Site Issues

Wincustomize is one of my favorite web sites. I’m a big fan of Stardock’s program’s which I’ve been using for about ten year’s now. It seems like I’m always finding different ways to find things on the site that I never even knew were there. There doesn’t seem to be a up to date or complete guide to navigating the win customize libraries anywhere that I have found, and I’ve spent a lot of time searching.

For example, I just figured out that there are a lot of files on the skinner’s pages that don’t appear in the explore libraries. A lot of these files are some pretty impressive pieces of work. A good bit of them are only linked to by a file name, which most of the time doesn’t even hint at if it’s a window blind, icon, or whatever. It does however tell you how many times it was downloaded today, which is totally irrelevant to someone like me. A few skinners actually get to have pictures like the explore libraries do, instead of having to click each file to see the picture. I’m not sure why some do and some don’t, or if it’s something in the way I’m accessing the pages.

There’s no site map to help you find what you may be missing. I think most people figure they are finding everything using the explore page, and by that they are missing much more than they are finding. Some libraries listed only have a few items while others that are not listed have a lot more. It seems like different sorts pull up different files even though the word sort leads you to believe they are just being placed in a different order. There seems to be a lot of duplicates too, which take the place of other files you don’t get to see at all. Some of the programs you can’t even find a description of much less the download for that program.

Wiki has a lot of useful information but I don’t think most people know to look there, and if they do, they are likely to be quickly discouraged by the multitude of broken links, and outdated information and tutorials. This is all easy for me to say, having never run a web site myself, lol. I would not have the first clue of how to do it any better than it is done now, and for all of my complaints it is still one of my favorite sites, and probably the only one I’ve spent ten years visiting.

...so...after ten years I make this post and the very next day I figure out if you click on the skinners name then on the link under their name you can get to their gallery. tada
