This still affect 64bit Windows.  Windows 8 and now 8.1 in my case.

The live folder icon are stored in the "imageres.dll" file.

The funny way that Windows works, this file is located in three separate folders:

• System32
• SysWOW64
• WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-imageres_31bf3856ad364e35_6.2.9200.16384_none_d968af13c94ccaf8

The exact folder name of the last might be peculiar to my system, I can't say for sure.  Since updating to Windows 8.1, the WinSxS folder is empty.

These folders are system folders and to alter the imageres file requires taking ownership of the files, editing them in a resource editor, saving and rebuilding the icon cache. This is not as easy as it sounds.  Windows tends to resist alterations to these files.  I've managed to edit and commit the changes to all three, once, and got live folders working exactly as it works on my Win7 32bit system; properly.  After being forced to perform a system file check using SFC, some instances of live folders reverted to Windows default.  I haven't been able to repeat the process to reinstate.

This is too much to ask of the average user to try and do.  I hope that Stardock can finally get around to updating IconPackager.  The current version predates Windows 8.

New problem:

Since updating to Windows 8.1, MS has added more icons than IconPackager can handle.  I'm referring to icons displayed in File Explorer in the My PC view.  The drives are skinned, but the new group "Folders" shows default icons.  Same goes for Network locations.

IconPackager is essential to the Stardock skinning experience.  It's time its had a thorough overhaul.

I concur! Live icons are systematically glitchy. Sometimes they are skinned, sometimes they're not. In my experience they work fine if you get them to be applied, but eventually they'll get changed back. Changed back to the previous skin in my present case, not to Windows default.

I am running Win 8.1 64-bit and I tried this but it did not fix the issue. 

I also agree that Icon Packager is a necessary component of Object Desktop.

My Bad. I rebooted and applied another package and My live folders now work even if they are not empty.

Windows 8.1 icons which I changed with Icon packager 5.10 are "forgetting"into which Icon I've changed em,
and shows white square instead.

With Fences disappearing icons issue, I'm starting to be a little bit disappointed with Stardock product(s)

I can see here in forums that some bugs aren't fixed for months.

I don't want to spend eternity to fix something over and over, I'd rather like that paid program is properly tested.

It speaks to the quality and ethics of Stardock and it's products that this thread has been open for over a YEAR with NO response from Stardock.  Considering a year+ is ample enough time to fix this bug within IconPackager, and at the minimum reply to this thread and others addressing the issue and when it will be fixed, as well as workaround instructions, its abhorrent this has yet to be addressed.  

I'm also running Win 8.1 Pro x64, and considering x64 is the main architecture used on newer PC's and Laptops due to the 4GB memory limitation of x86, to have a massive bug within IconPackager floating around since Win 7 x64 and not being fully transparent on the IconPackager and ObjectDesktop products pages is blatant incompetence and dishonesty.  the Stardock suite of products is an amazing collection of software, but this is beyond ridiculous. 

Complete overhaul is needed indeed.  I said this when Windows 8 and 8.1 came out.  Icon Packager needs to be fixed for compatibility issues asap.

Will IconPackager ever be updated to Windows 8 or even any 64 bit version Windows?

I had to add and change multiple keys in the registry in order to get my icons working, as well as change out a few icons in both imageres.DLLs, but will IconPackager ever work as it should?

I would like to know before renewing my ObjectDesktop subscription since I would like everything to work as it should.

The short answer is no... per posts above, this has been an issue for over 5 years, beginning with Win 7 x64.

I've thought about cancelling mine as well, however IconPackager isn't the only program you get in the subscription.  If you use other programs that are win 8/8.1 compatible (most programs in the subscription are) like WindowBlinds, Start8, ModernMix, Decor8, WindowsFX, etc. then I would recommend going through the programs you do use and pricing them both as individual purchases and as a subscription purchase.  Whichever one is cheaper is the solution I would go with.  

My guess, and I could be wrong, is that Stardock is not a large company... and for whatever reason have chosen, to my dislike and irritation as well as others, to not give their programs the simple capabilities of reskinning system live folders.  Windows 8 Manager from Yamicsoft allows you to point and click to change numerous windows skinned icons, however it only gives you two options for live folders (Desktop and Download folders).  

While you can edit system dll files, the downside is they will more likely than not fail the component store check (sfc /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth) registering as corrupted system files.  If they do register as corrupted, both sfc and dism will replace the files, thereby losing all custom changes made.  Due to the fact you will need to run sfc and dism restore health commands at some point (I'd recommend no less than once a month, as I do mine once a week), it simply isn't worth it unless you make a copy of the dll's you edited and replace them manually after every sfc and dism scan.

To be honest,these 3 products are out of dates considering the current market trend on MS OS. The touch feature is much enticing than dock-clicking on desktop............etc.,

I doubt that highly. There are enough non touch desktops and laptops still out there.
