Bootskins?

Sunday, March 14, 2004 by Richard Mohler | Discussion: Stardock Software

I was trying to make a bootskin and got it to work but the picture didn't look all that good. I just want to know if there's a trick to make them look smoother and clearer, beacause mine looked really grainy. Thanks, Richard

patience and persistance. keep trying different methods of converting the pic to 4bit. You might have to do some major editting to make it look right. I suggest you don't try to just convert pictures to 4bit, but start out with 4bit in mind or set....just my opinion.

No trick...just the limitation of a 16 colour palette....either keep the image simply coloured or monochrome and they won't appear as 'bad'.

Note also that some people 'cheat' with their previews and use higher colour resolutions on them....which is false advertising....their actual bootskins are just as 'poor' as any other...

I have paint shop which I made some pictures with 4 bit 16 colour and they looked allright , but when I made a progress bar the same way it screwed the whole picture up. Do you have any idea why this would happen? Richard

When you made the progress bar, did you use the exact same 16-color palette? The palette for the two items must be identical.

I went ahead and tried it again today and everything works fine, " go figure". Guess yesterday wasn't a good day. Thanks, Richard

Richard....the two images MUST use the identical palette.

That cannot be stressed enough...
