Tooltips

Sunday, November 2, 2003 by Argelius | Discussion: Stardock Software

Is there any way to reduce the time it takes for tooltips to appear after the mouse hovers above an icon? (Some of my DX objects aren't always obvious as to what they control. I've added "tooltips" in the properties summary page, but I'd like them to pop up more quickly. I suspect there is some registry tweak, but I can't find any references to tootips there...) THanks!

Sorry, I don't know anything about DX, but someone will come along who does. But if these are the same tooltips that Windows uses, I would love to know how to get rid of them. A thread was started on this subject some time ago, and I don't think anyones found the answer yet.

There is no speed adjustment per se for tooltips, but here's the one for menus. It might work for both.

Registry Settings
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
Value Name: MenuShowDelay
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Value Data: 0-999 (milliseconds)

modify the existing value, named 'MenuShowDelay' and set it to the delay you would like before the menus are shown as a time in milliseconds.

Gee crissy, I just read your post...about the only one you can get rid of in XP is 'min/max/close'. If that happens to trip your trigger, here ya go

Registry Settings
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
Value Name: MinMaxClose
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

I downloaded a free program called TweakUI for Windows XP ...it has lots of options including a checkbox for "Enable Tooltip Animation" and "Enable Tooltip Fade".

You can download it here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp (the third item down on the right side) It's really a nifty program, and small footprint.
