Microsoft's Big Mac Sales

eWeek Microsoft Watch posted this little goodie today.
Here's a big number: 20 percent of Microsoft Office's U.S retail sales are the Mac version, according to NPD. Here's another: Mac users account for 10 percent of retail Windows Vista Business and Ultimate sales.
Those startling statistics are yet another sign of the Mac's resurgence and of the huge opportunity it creates for the largest Macintosh developer outside of Apple. Microsoft produced Mac versions of Excel and Word long before the products went to Windows. Apple's resurgence is an opportunity for Microsoft to recall those early glory days.
Now I didn't post this start an Apply vs Microsoft shooting war, just thought it was interesting. It looks like it's a win, win situation as far as Microsoft is concerned. Lets hear your thoughts.

So do I! I think it's great that users can have OS inter-operability, that Mac users can avail themselves of MS products and visa versa. Of course, I'd like to see it taken a few steps further, where 3rd party devs create multi-platform software/hardware as well, but maybe that's a dream which will take a while to come to fruition.

I would personally like to see 3rd party programs port their programs to Linux but I guess that will not happen till global warming causes another ice age and hell frezzes over...

IMHO< one of MAC's biggest flaws is that it is so insular and keeps trying to avoid competition.
If the Apple company starts changing for the better, good for them. I may even buy a MAC, years down the road if they changed.

I wanted to look at an iBook when looking for a laptop. Seriously, I considered it.
But because of the reasons I am buying a laptop (for work purposes), command prompt is a necessity. That and, uh...oh yeah...PRICE! I'm a cheapskate who balks at Vista's prices. Mac's prices are unfathomable!

An interesting tangent to this article is that "Boot camp", the software that lets you dual-boot your OSX Tiger into Windows, is going to expire on Tiger. Only those that upgrade to Leopard will be able to use it.
Now, most Macheads are upgrade fools so it's not a huge issue. But for those that need to dual-boot, now need to upgrade.
Having said that, Parallels says that you will be able to read your Boot Camp partition as a virtual drive on a virtual machine and still run Vista.
Sales of Vista for Macs may drop.
Interestingly, the whole issue of dual-booting only makes sense one way. Macs are such a small segment that beyond the aesthetic, I can't think of a good reason for a PC to run Mac OX. However, because of the application base that MS OS's have, many OSX users have a real need to dual-boot, virtualize, or run apps designed for Windows.

I think it's hillarious that the quoted article states it's a good thing for Apple.
