What Do You Want In A Dream?
Wednesday, September 26, 2007 by Zoomba | Discussion: Animated Wallpapers
DeskScapes has been available for several months now, and DreamScene just went from beta to final yesterday. Animated Desktops in Vista are becoming a more and more solid thing. We've seen a lot of great contributions from a wide variety of artists here at WinCustomize. Everything from original 3D renders, to great manipulations of static images with programs like Adobe After Effects.
My question is, what style of animated desktop do people like the most? Do you have example to share?
Me personally, I like stylized Dreams that don't have too much motion. Here are my two favorite community-contributed Dreams:

Both are absolutely beautiful and show off how cool an animated desktop can be without being too visually distracting. When I pick a Dream to use, I look for ones like the Dreams linked above.
How about you?

If there's one thing I've learned, it's that artists submitting work to sites like WinCustomize love feedback on what users like and dislike. Otherwise, they're just tossing their work out blindly and hoping it sticks.
As for school themed animated wallpapers, those are a very sticky issue since the CLC very tightly controls use of school marks and logos, even in free work.
But for college theme fans, there may be something for you in the relatively near future
And since you're a big UAB fan, take a look at this:

Me? I'm still waiting for a Penn State one ![]()

Hopefully, a University of Alabama Flag waving on my desktop Dream will be in my future? lol

I also want to see a desktop that's more practical. I'm still holding out for a dynamic dream that hooks up to weather.com or something, given my zip code, and looks up my weather. Then, the dreamscene changes to reflect the weather. Also, having the sun rise and sun set according to my computer's time would be a welcome addition.
I guess I'm really looking forward to more dynamic dreams. Of course, I have no idea how they work or how hard they are to code, so it's just my dream dreamscene.

I know there isn't a way for the community to create those and that is something that needs to be corrected if possible.
I haven't found anything that can replace Liquid Dream.
I would love to see some seasonal dynamic dreams. snow being the obvious. Maybe an extension of the Natural Desktop idea. Background could change to rain, or sunshine or leaves blowing across the desktop when windy... etc etc. That I would happily pay a little more for.

That broaches the land of copyright. You have to be careful on that tread. I know you arn' t the only one to bring something like this up but I thought I would say it anyway.

More of those 'dynamic content' dreams that utilise the power of a top end graphics card.
As simple as it was, I quite liked the rotating Stardock 'box' logo one and would like to see more of this kind of thing...
Wholeheartedly agree with you there, John

There is a dream on here that is a flag created by GH33DA that is absolutely stunning.
My point being, some of these Dreams are absolutely georgous, some are too busy, but in the end, I think the Dreams must show some personality, that to me, is so important.
Thanks for starting this thread, it gives us "un-talented" individuals a chance to be heard...lol
