You are going to get a lot of recommendations, but I personally used Trend Micro for years, and it works fine with Vista.

Well Nimbin has provided exactly the list that I would have, expect for Windows Defender...haven't used it so can not comment. I would however add

WWW Link

All the programs listed are free, well known & I have been using them for years with no issues. Both Adaware SE & Spybot have had recent overhauls & work better than ever. I would also include

CCleaner
Another great free program that cleans the junk out of your computer & also has had a complete overhaul.

Many are coming away from Norton products and heading off into NOD32

Could not edit post the first link is for SpywareBlaster, the only program besides AVG that actively monitors you PC. The other programs must scan your computer to find any Rogue files or programs.

The free version of Adaware is a good recommendation however the new version likes to run in the background and for the life of me I cannot work out why it neeeds to do this. Well, I can but it does not need to. It can use quite a chunk of memory when doing this and depending on what else you've got going on and your PC specs it can have quite an affect on your machine. I've disabled this part of the function and reclaimed memory. So Adaware fans.......be aware

Because you mentioned online games, I'll throw this in. If AVG (if you decide to get it - I use it, too) is scanning, it can really cut your frame rates. I suppose a motherlode of RAM might help - never tried. Nevertheless, it's easy enough to pause the scan while you're playing, or what I do is schedule it to run while I'm sleeping.

Very good free Anti-virus, IMHO. I use Spybot Search and Destroy as well, and that sucker rocks.

I don't think you will find any suggestions here that haven't been tried and tested by those offering them up. When it comes to keeping you computer Healthy most people who respond in these forums don't play around.

I use free versions of commercial/business programs that are available for home/personal use. Why, The free version are usually offered after being used and tested in the commercial/business world. Gives me a sense that the developer/programs have the bugs worked out. Just my opinion.

Nimbin's list is a good one to start with.

I was using AVG for the last year. Over the last 2 weeks i noticed that my computer was running sluggish. So I decided to switch to Avast witch is free. It found a virus witch AVG did not. My computer is working good once again.

Also use VistaFirewallControl wich is free and works great.

I am sure there are lot of better things which we can do using our anti-virus softwares other just scanning the system for errors and defects. How many of you think that it is better to install a anti-virus instead of an anti-spammer?

I prefer bitdefender. Havent looked back since i bought a license. Tried norton and mcafee and those two are just a strain on your system.
Btdefender runs smoothly in the background continuously scanning without affecting your pcs performance.
Coupled with spysweeper and advanced system optimizer i haent had any probs with my machine in over 2 years Plus i use opera to minimize the risk of getting infected too. firefox just doesnt do it for me.

HAVE BEEN USING AVAST FOR AGES. VERY LOW MEMORY USAGE AND ALSO USING AVIRA. BEEN VERY GOOD TO ME. BUT LIKE THE REST SPYBOT HAS SAVED MY ASS FEW TIMES. TRIED ALL OF THEM. KASPERSKY STOPPED ME USING THE INTERNET,NORTON SLOWED MY PC DOWN PLUS DIDNT CATCH A FEW TROJENS. NOD32 NOT TO BAD.AVG WAS ALSO GOOD BUT WAS ALSO TAKING UP A BIT OF MEMORY. ITS NOT MY PC BECAUSE ITS UP TO A DECENT SPEC WITH A VISTA RATING OF 5.1.

PS. I AM STILL LEARNING THE ROPES. HAVE ONLY HAD PC FOR 2 YEARS.

I second NOD32...I switched from Norton to NOD32 about 2-3 years ago and love it. I am not sure how it compares, but on my Vista computer it is now using 12.8 MB of memory.

GILBERTRATCHET - what's up with all the shouting?

I use McAfee only because Comcast gives it out free. As for a free AV I would go with Avast.I heard someone say that AVG may not be offering a free version much longer.

BitDefender AV 2008 ($24.95) has a Gamer Mode option that "Provides a smooth gaming experience by reducing the system load to a minimum". Some of the other brands mentioned above might also have something similar.
