Correcting problem with user accounts and power up

Saturday, May 5, 2007 by sophiesboy | Discussion: Windows XP

Recently, I had to replace my hard-drive due to a fatal crash. The reinstallation went well and I am once again up and running. I also took this opportunity to put in a new video card, an ATI Radeon X1300 Pro, after restoring drive functionality.

I have always preferred to be able to just turn on my machine and go. Since no one else has access to my machine, I feel perfectly safe setting up my system to go straight to my desktop once I power on. No logging in, no passwords.

However, since the installation of the new video card, I do not seem to be
able to do this.

When I go to Control Panel->User Accounts I notice two things. First there is an account which I did not create, called "ASP.NET Machine A..." (the actual listing) which is a "Limited Account, Password Protected". I cannot be certain, but I believe this was somehow created during the video card installation.

I am assuming that this unknown account is the reason I am being asked to verify myself when I power up, on the theory that my machine is recognising the possibility of multiple users.

When I look at removing the account, in order to remove this possible
conflict, I am asked whether I want to save the contents of the ASP.NET
desktop etc.

First question: If I delete this account and save the contents of the
associated desktop and documents, will I be able to restore the account if it turns out to be necessary to good functionality?

Second question: What is the likelihood that I am correct in my assumption that removing this unknown account will allow me to perform the kind of power up that I am looking to do?

Third question: If the answer to the second question is "None", is there some other process by which I can set myself up to execute the type of power up I would like?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Delete the ASP account. You don't have to save anything. It will power up normally w/o password logon. Install this: WWW Link

Sorry, still not powering up as I would like.

When I hit the power switch, I still get a box asking for my password.

In Control Panel->User Accounts, it now shows the two accounts: my (adminstrator) account and the guest account, which is turned off.

The only option which seems to be relevant to my problem is the "Change the way users log on or off" option. If I click on this, I get "Select logon and logoff options", of which there are two.

The first is "Use the Welcome Screen". If I check this, when I power up I get the Welcome screen and have to click on my account name to get to the desktop. If I do not check the "Welcome Screen" option, when I power up I get the classic user name/password box asking for my password.

The second option under "Change the way ..." is "Use fast user switching" which I have not bothered to check because of the lack of other users on this machine.

So I am at a dead end. Within the "User Accounts" module I can not see any other options available that would allow what I want.

What am I missing? I know that this is possible, as I used to have my machine set this way. Is the option buried somewhere else?

sophiesboy I have mine setup to go directly to my desktop....but I had to do this

# Start Menu >> Run…
# type: Control Userpasswords2
# Uncheck “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer

To stop the classic login from appearing and of course unchecking the Welcome screen option and disabling fast user switching.

Also make sure that you go to

1. Start Menu >> Control Panel >> Power Options >> Advanced Tab
2. Uncheck “Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby”

& in display options unchecking using password after resume from screensaver.

Hope that helps

Install this: WWW Link

You're making this way too hard. You have the wrong .NET Framework version installed. Install the link in #1 or this (on XP, it's makes no difference, although version 2 is all XP while 3 is more oriented to Vista): WWW Link

Personally, I find clicking on a few options in Control Panel a lot easier than downloading upgrades and patches. (I thought that was the purpose of "Automatic Update".)

In any case, after downloading from the link above and having the problem not resolve itself (as indicated in my #2 above), I went back to the Windows web-site and ran the Update page again, and discovered that the download from #1 above required 5 separate update patches. After downloading and installing those (another twenty minutes out of my life), I am now able to boot directly to the desktop.

Not that it matters, but you're welcome for the ten minutes it took out of my life to give you the answer.......twice

the asp account is really nothing, it has nothing to do with your vid card nor drivers, the asp account i think it's for msn messenger or winblows messenger.i always deleted it so it's pretty safe to get rid of it.
