Cpu races and computer won't respond?

Can anyone help with this kind of problem?

You have a process that's hanging (most likely). If you can bring up the task panel and check your processes to see which one is consuming 99% of your CPU then kill that process. Assuming that works try to go from there to figure out why the process hanged. Used this method more than a few times you just have to be patient for the task panel to appear.

Everything is going along just fine then all the sudden the cpu starts racing and computer doesn't respond when I click anything,like task manager to see what's going on. It seemed to just start happening I haven't got any new software or anything.

ok, next time you reboot, before ytou do anythihg else, run anti virus software and any spyware software u have, make sure that a virus or spyware isnt the problem, if any of thoise programs find something make sure they delete them, then watch and see if it happens again, it really does sound like a virus or rogue piece of spyware. good luck mate

Hope it's not what my problem was a while back. The mobo was on its way out....everything was fine at start-up, but as case temperatures began to rise the CPU would race and the OS would eventually cease to function. It may be worth checking out if none of the above answers apply.

Richard,
We need some more details.
Are you referring to boot-up failure?
Can you access the boot options screen (F8) during boot to get to safe mode?
Best option is to disconnect any 'usb' peripherals and try to get to safe mode. Failing that see if you can get to the BIOS settings to see if your components (CPU, RAM, Power Supply, Drives, and Monitor) are listed and whether the listings are correct.
Failing the above, try opening the case and remove all but the first bank of RAM (usually slot '0' in a two slot MoBo, or slot '0' of channel 'A' in a four slot MoBo), disconnect all drives except the drive with the OS installed, and check all connections (including the power supply connectors, the drive connectors, and reseat the one stick of RAM).
Then try to boot to safe mode (or normal boot if you like).
Some basic ideas based on the little current info.
