what program for creating backgrounds ?

I've been googeling a lot but didn't really find the answers i was looking for.
Then i saw this site, checked the wallpaper section and was like "wow".
Now, my question is: what program is beeing used for most of these beautiful wallpapers ? or maybe a better question would be: what program is the best for creating ANY wallpaper ?
I bought Photoshop CS2 recently, hopeing it would do me good but all the tutorials i found are so different them the pictures beeing showed here. So started wondering if i did make the right choice.
Any tips, advice and answers appreciated!

Wallpapers are just regular images such as jpegs(.jpg), or bitmaps (.bmp), there's no special technology behind them to make them work. A lot of people draw them in photoshop, some use 3d rendering programs, others user Corel Draw. It all depends on your application of preference. No application is going to make a fantastic wallpaper on its own, so it's all about finding the graphics tools that you feel the most comfortable with.
Just don't use Bryce... Bryce is BAD

What do u think ? they used a program like photoshop or more like 3d render ?

Nuvem generally uses Photoshop [essentially a 2D graphics proggy].
The number one thing he uses, however is one heck of a lot of talent and skill, something NO graphics program can EVER give you.
Everyone can theoretically use a Graphics Program - not too many can use it/them at all well.
Think of it like....yes, I have an opposing thumb and can hold a paintbrush, and yes, I know which end the paint is supposed to go on....but then so does/did Rembrant.....

CS2 should work just fine. You'll need to narrow your search a bit to find tutorials specific to CS2. Most tuorials are either Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro but there's also a host of others, ie. 3D programs like Bryce and vector programs like Corel Draw that are used. There are a few "free" versions (open source) available on the web (Try sourceforge.net)
