This site is so slow

Thursday, July 13, 2006 by kat7 | Discussion: Stardock Software

What on earth is making this website so slow.

It is painful to search the site. I just ran a test on my download speed and its running at 2456 kbps ... why is it taking at least a min. for a page to download? Half the time I have to refresh to even get the page to load.

To top it off this SD Central page is cut into 4 frames.

Who the heck designed this site? And were they hung at sunrise? If not they should have been.

I purchased OD a couple of weeks ago and have not visited either stardock or wincustomize without having this slower than a snail service.

Both companies can drop to their knees and thank the great artists who donate their time and effort to these sites or I would have already asked for a refund.

kwkid ...thanks for #38.  It pretty-well covers all the salient points....

The real advantage of Stardock Central is not necessarily its 'browsing'.... but the convenience of its integration of 'all things' Stardock....specifically the access to and updating of Stardock's programs and games and its IRC client to facilitate easy 'instant' communication with fellow users [and provide assistance with issues].

If the browser component feels less than satisfactory [for whatever reason] well, hey, there's a whole swag of alternatives...IE/FF/Opera for starters...

In SDC clicking the divider seperating the far right colum hides it. You can use the Network menu option to navigate if you want. [You can also choose to uncheck "Show Network banner" to get a little more real-estate.] {- 1 "frame"}

As reported by Digital Danes, it is apparrent that you were reading discussions (which loads a browser in the third "frame") and clicked on a link. The expected behavior is to load that link in the existing browser.

I also note that your first screenshot is not formatted to show the top of the page. You have scrolled down to give the impression that there is another frame. What you are showing is a navigation panel for other galleries. I believe you did this on purpose to bolster your flawed argument. What you did, for me at least, is illustrate a desperation to be "right" when you are aware you are wrong.

Long load times have been and can be addressed. You are not alone in having problems. But be aware that for every database problem that occurs (and is addressed by the Wincustomize admins and such) , there is also some [edited three times] person who's problem is related to their system, ISP, etc.

I hope you got the attention you wanted. It'll be remembered for a long time around here by the people who have been here long before you and know the answers to any future questions or complaints you might have.

Hm. Any chance we can have a little bit of text at the bottom of each apge that shows how much time the site used to process the page like at dA? Then, whenever we have this type of discussion again  it's easier to find out where the bottleneck by comparing the time it took to process the page against a tracert of how long it took to connect to the site.

We did that at the office and got burned the hard way. Our timer recorded the time it took the ASP page to load . . not the time it took the database to actually retrieve the data and display it. It did not go well when the client came back with a stopwatch. -=sigh=-

Maybe WC could do it better.

this thread has certainly taken a downward spiral.

with all that's happening in the world today, we find time to bicker over the speed of a website.

this thread has certainly taken a downward spiral

It started out pretty far down and hasn't gotten any better.

You know . . . the new users who are quiet and polite never get the attention they deserve. It's the [ZubaZ puts on flamebait hat] loud-mouth whiners that drag this joint through the mud.

ZubaZ removes hat

Thank you quiet majority.

Could/should I have been a bit wiser in my approach? Sure! Being frustrated is no excuse for being rude ... for that I apologize.

Thank you for apologizing. Good start.

However for people representing the company support

Unless you see [Stardock] by someone's name, they are not representing Stardock. They are members of the community that hang out here. Once you've been around for a while you'll recognize the smart-asses, the quiet helpers, the expert in this or that. It takes time, give it some.

Also remember, as we all should (myself included), text does not communicate tone, cultures are different, people are different, and smileys only go sa far. Take a little time to read what you are writing and imagine that you are not posting to an anonymous forum. Imagine instead, that you are at the local pub or cafe with all your friends around you (and the owner of the joint and wait-staff about). Think about how what you post might be taken.

Today is a good day, let's act like it is.

No. Bad idea. When you sit around your friends and talk you tpoo easily forget you're in a public place and talk out lound about anything. ...you even see that when people are on the phone whilst sitting on busses...

kat7,

Instead of using SDC to access the site, my personal recommendation would be to use FireFox.  I'm currently seeing weird slow-downs on the forums and main pages with Internet Explorer (which is the browser Stardock Central uses).  We've been working through technical issues with the site for some time now and continue to find and eliminate bugs as time goes on.

Also, something else to keep in mind is that while Stardock runs WinCustomize.com, purchasing a product such as Object Desktop does not directly go to covering costs of the site.  WinCustomize is here to provide the skinning community a centralized location to gather and exchange work.  Many people who purchase our software may not ever visit WC.

A WinCustomize subscription goes more directly to covering the site.  The more people we have that actually subscribe, the more resources we can hopefully devote to improvements.

I'm sorry your first brush with the community here has been so negative, I only hope you choose to stick it out and give it all a second chance.  Many of the people here are volunteers who donate a lot of their free time to answering questions/helping out.  Sometimes, an overly-critical/angry post will get everyone feeling a bit defensive.

Wha?

I take my kid to the beach for a longish weekend, come back and y'all are arguing for days with someone that doesn't know an application from a webpage? and can't count?

Hello Zoomba,

Welcome to Stardock staff ... looks like you will be a very positive addition here.
I hope your cat had a safe trip too ... without to much stress

Thank you for taking a moment to give me the scoop on what is being done behind the scenes.
Understandable and acceptable

I will try Foxfire as you suggest.
It is not my default browser but I do have it plus 2 others installed on this system.

I'm sorry your first brush with the community here has been so negative, I only hope you choose to stick it out and give it all a second chance. Sometimes, an overly-critical/angry post will get everyone feeling a bit defensive.

Your concern is truly appreciated ... thank you. However it was not a negative experience for me ... in fact it has been a lot of fun.
I did not miss the defensive "chest beating ... me tarzan ... you intruder" attitude that surfaced right away.

I must plead the devil made me do it defense because I could not resist the temptation of playing with these guys ... "chest beaters" always seem to be easy prey. They all have a typical pattern of behavior ... maybe because pounding ones chest takes so much energy it switches off the thinking part of the brain. I have always been entertained by watching that particular phenomenon.

But drat I only ended up being a trolling malcontent who can't count, design a website and posts phony screenshots ... what the heck happened to "flaming bitch"? I am sure they thought it ... lol ... and they would be right.

Not to worry I will not be discourage by a couple of guys who can not maintain their cool ... its my fault ... they were being worked so I expected them to come unglued ... they WERE NOT a disappointment

I did see someone say have fun ... so I did/am.

Thanks to a couple of you my complaints have been addressed and pretty much solved.
Tomorrow I will check out foxfire and see if it helps the page load time.
I do not know why I thought it was necessary to visit WC thru SD Central ... maybe because I had no clue there was such a site until I accessed SD Central and found a link there. Thanks to Koasati for pointing me to logging directly on to WC. DigitalDanes may have mentioned it too ... once there I pulled the doc and there are no frames on WC only tables. I have tried to duplicate the extra frame in the main window of the SD Central software and can not so either I imagined it or it was a one time glitch.
In any case I must apologize for the Sucky Stardock/WC design comments because when I access either site without going thru SD Central both sites are superbly designed.
So NICE GOING staff!
I am sorry for the rude comments about your work.

You guys that I jacked around? I am not sorry ... you are big boys and you deserved that and more ... lol

Have a great week everyone

What? I find that a little hard to believe.
If in fact that is true ... you might want to consider if you are not sure about you then there is certainly nothing else in the world you can be sure of but dropping dead at some point.

Don't you think first impressions should be truthful impressions?

Do you live a covert life ... smiling to someone's face while holding a knife behind your back ready to strike?

Somewhere in one of your posts I picked up the impression that you seem to think if I were face to face with this group (in a pub was it)? That I might behave differently. You are dead wrong.

I do not have to impress people ... I am sorry that apparently you find that a necessary part of your existence.

I am what I am ... and that am is not defined by someone else ... EVER.

By now you are probably wondering why someone has not smacked me (in that pub)?
Probably because I seldom (if ever) throw the first blow and like you suggest (most people) would not say to your face what they would say on a forum or behind your back.

So the good behavior we see on a forum might be a true impression.
The bad behavior always is.

Let me define what I see going on here.
You have people who claim they are supporting the betterment of this site.
99% of the people here are actually supporting the betterment of the site.
They are the quiet ones you talk about. I did not see any of them leaping into the middle of this fray (maybe Phoon for a moment ... I do not count him).
What is the objective of Stardock and WC? ... to attract new clients and members.

It is my understanding new team members are onboard to do exactly that.

Do you see the behavior of these guys who all leaped on the "take a hike" bandwagon as counter productive to that goal?
It certainly stopped me from whipping the extra $20 out of my wallet which I would have paid in a heartbeat.

Why did it stop me?
Not because there are a few people who are goaded into further exposing their jerkdom.
But because contributing to something that is being sabotaged from the inside by people who claim to be support the system simply is not my cup of tea.

Do you care about any of this?
If you are truly interested in this group you should be.
Sure it has a free feature so far but the goal is to gather paying members.
Do you care what % are free and what % are paid?
If not you should ... because at some point SOMEBODY will not be able to support the overload ... and if/should that happen YOU ALL lose your home away from home.

If you are truly comitted to WC you might want to consider some of the perceptions I have presented.
It's your community.
I am so far only a visitor here.

Does anyone else find it somewhat strange that a person who supposedly has 40+ websites can't figure out how to enter a url into FireFox or Internet Explorer, even when the url is clearly listed at the top of SDCentral's web browser?

There can be a difference in being an obnoxious twit and being truthful; there can also be a middle ground. You have choosen to be both.

I am sure then that I would not want my first impression in a community I have interest in to be such a twit. I would curb my natural inclination to see if twits are welcome. I would go or stay based on the response.

I care very little for the site itself except that it has brought me this community. The skins could be hosted anywhere (and would be if WC stopped providing the service it would). It'd be a bummer but these things happen in any community. Sometime some folks stay in contact . . sometimes not. I care more about the people.

What is the objective of Stardock and WC? ... to attract new clients and members.

That may be Stardock's goal. Not mine. I have been highly critical of this site, the company, and it's products. But I have always tried to be polite and constructive. My goal is to hang out with my friends, helps new folks out if I can. I hope that they become members because it supports the community. I dig that.

I do not have to impress people ... I am sorry that apparently you find that a necessary part of your existence.

Being polite and impressing people are two different things. I'm cool with being polite.

No one beat their chest or joined a bandwagon. I think you have other issues hat you are projecting on strangers here.

I am so far only a visitor here.

Stick around or leave or whatever. I think you're an obnoxious twit. Honest and forthright. Happy?

Not when you consider those 40+ can probably be found under "Favorites" - "Organize Favorites...".

I've noticed the site being extremely slow to load pages the past few days as well.  Seems to be the stuff from sitemeter & e0 that is taking so long so might not be SD's problem directly.  Nonetheless, the page is frozen until that stuff finishes.  Even after the status bar says Done, may take another 10-15 seconds before the page unfreezes.  Current FF here, viewing under IETab plugin.

How is it not using IETab?  I've found almost everything loads slow with IETab.
