Start11 v1.22 Delivers a Better Search Experience

Better Search for Windows

Tuesday, May 3, 2022 by BradSams | Discussion: Start News

We released an update to Start11 this week that adds a couple of new features to the application - and squashes a few bugs, too. The update is available now and you can either download it from our site or use the in-app update process.

Get it Now

There are a couple of enhancements to the search experience in this release. If you use Edge as your browser, your opened tabs will now show up in your search results. Along with your tabs, we have updated the search results experience to boost the most recent run app of a search query to help you find your relevant content faster.

In addition to the search updates, you can now add the “seconds” back to the clock on the Taskbar if you are running a dev or beta channel build of Windows 11. Note that those on the release build of Windows 11 will not see this option, but once Microsoft updates the OS to a newer build the option will appear.

Start11 search results now show open tabs in Edge

We have also updated our translations for several languages in v1.22. Make sure to check out the entire changelog to see all of the updates we have made to the app!

Our goal with Start11 is about not just to restore classic functionality to Windows 11 (like bringing back a Windows 10 or Windows 7 menu), but also to enhance the OS's functionality by enabling ungrouping of windows while centered, and more. By adding little features like having your tabs surface in search results show, or customizing the Windows 11 style menu to add and remove sections, Start11 provides a robust set of controls and experiences to dial in your perfect Windows desktop.

As we continue to evolve Start11 to bring new and unique features to Windows 10 and Windows 11, we would love to know what you would like to see in our next update.

I would like to request Stardock implement a polished version of this GitHub taskbar feature in their Start11/10 product:

tjackenpacken/taskbar-groups: Lightweight utility for organizing the taskbar through groups (github.com)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ov61lWNKKHA

The GitHub project is great but it is a bit clunky and has some issues at times. I feel Stardock could implement this feature well into the new taskbar they rebuilt.

This feature essentially allows you to cluster unrelated applications taskbar launcher icons into groups. So you would make a group labeled "Work" and inside of it you would have like "Word, Excel, Zoom, etc." then you could have a "Gaming" group where it holds all your launcher icons like "Xbox, Steam, Ubisoft, RPCS3, etc" and this really frees up space on the taskbar if you have a lot of pinned icons. Each group could be given a custom icon to represent the group as well as the GitHub project does.

I hope this gets implemented at some point as I would appreciate it a ton. Having everything integrated into Start11 would be awesome and I know the Stardock team could make it look slick! Thanks for your time.

Hi,

I am having problems and bugs with the task bar since v1.22. I have the option enabled that taskbar buttons should always be combined.

First of all I don´t like the new behaviour for clicking a button group.

Previous to v1.22 when you clicked a group the preview would open and from there you could select your prefered window.

Now when you click the currently (or last?) opened window gets focus, also my mouse gets weirdly moved to the bottom left screen when I click a group. When you want to select a specific window you have to hover the group first, I liked the previous behaviour more. This is made worse, because the hover a group function sometimes doesnt work and doesnt display anything.

Summary:

Bug 1: taskbar button group hovering sometimes doesnt work

Bug 2: when clicking a taskbar button group the mouse gets teleported to the bottom left of the screen (not when clicking non-group buttons)

Feature Request: introduce an option to enable previous behaviour of taskbar button groups, so that when you click the preview gets shown instead of focusing the last window of the group

To close it off, I relly like Start11, has made Windows 11 a lot better for me. I´d really appreciate if you could fix these issues.

Thanks for your time.

I'm hoping you'll be able to implement left and right positioning for the taskbar in the future - that's the only feature I'm really missing from Win10 now.

In ungrouped mode, when having more instances of the same app open, ability to close just the selected window from the taskbar and not all.(right click)

That is strange as the behaviour did change but to what you want.

If you click on a grouped button it should popup the switcher.  Before it would switch to the last window.  If you have only one window of a group opened then it simply switches to that window.

It is curious as to why your mouse cursor would be moved too as your mouse should be over the button and I would expect it to remain there.  Are you using a mouse to click, a touchpad, touch or pen input?  Also are you using any sort of KVM software?

Also what monitor are you using as it is a known issue in Windows 11 that a secondary monitor will simply switch to the next window in a group when you click on the button.  This will be the same with or without Start11.

Hi Neil,

thank you for your response.

I have a 2 monitor setup. Primary UQWHD (3440x144) and the secondary is FHD. I am using mouse and keyboard nothing special.

I made a quick video of the problem. As you can see everytime I click on the group button (this happens for EVERY button group) the mouse gets teleported and the window doesnt even open. I am forced to hover first.

What is even more annoying, is that sometimes the hover doesnt even work, unfortunately I wasnt able to reproduce that for the recording.

Its very weird, maybe I should just clean reinstall?

The Secondary Monitor is left of the Primary Monitor. And both have no scaling (1x).

Do you have any idea how to fix this?

I tried purgin and re-installing as per this guide.

Unfortunately it did nothing and the bug still persists. Also I accidentaly removed my settings, oh well my fault.

For now I am turning Start11 off again until this bug is fixed, its to annoying. I´d be grateful for some kind of notification if the bug gets fixed (in this thread maybe).
