try skinning more of the objects and maybe use some gradirnts...thatll make it look better then just plain colors and give it some depth and a 3d look

I'm not a fan of gradients 
I'm also a programmer, not an artist, so any changes will take me a loooong time to make, heh. Out of curiosity though, I'm having a bit of trouble with the special folder stuff: you'll notice that in the control panel, if you click the "Control Panel" top part, then move the mouse away (but don't click elsewhere) the text disappears until you click on something else. I couldn't find where the heck this would be controlled, and the others don't do this...any ideas?

Great start, try to skin the toolbar buttons too

Great first try, although i can suggest one thing. Try to make rounder buttons and panels.
