I have this DREAM that comes with Object Desktop 2008, but this does not work very well for me ... Every time I restart my PC, the wallpaper that I had chosen go back to the standard. And the option of clouds does not work... HELP!!
Exact same here. any fix?

It has been almost a year since that battle of wits between FrogGuy and CATM on page 2, and I thought I would weigh in with some retrospective and offer my thoughts on the situation. I doubt very much that FrogGuy will review this thread anymore, but I will cross my fingers.
I have no problem at all with Stardock's pricing model as a generality. They are the most talented Shell-extending software company in the world, and their products range from helpfully enhancing to downright revolutionary. They deserve to be rewarded, and handsomely so, for their effforts and attention to detail.
That said, I have been reviewing the current state of DeskScapes for the past few days and feel extremely uneasy about it, and I wanted to see if any other users shared the views I have now.
When DeskScapes was first released, it was an extension for Ultimate's native DreamScenes that (in true Stardock fashion) vastly outclassed Microsoft's original intentions and efforts. This product was released for free to Ultimate users, as was a development tool that allowed hundreds of new dreams to be created. Asking for $5-10 for premium, intensively and professionally produced dreams after this is an extremely reasonable step to take. Both the premium dreams and the free studio utility cost money to produce at the time- asking money for only the optional of the two is in fact a generous programming effort, in contrast to CATM's complaints.
That is... to users of Vista Ultimate. As a Home Premium user, back then I quickly came to the realization that DreamScenes was the ONLY feature I was at all interested in over my version of Vista. And, for that matter, I was barely even interested in Microsoft's original offerings of strict video loops as desktop backgrounds- I was far more interested in dynamically generated, 3D animations that could take advantage of my GPU (like, oh, I don't know, Liquid Dream?). But after a very short period of deliberation, I came to what I feel was the reasonable conclusion that I did not feel it was worth spending $200 on a 3D desktop wallpaper. So all I could do at the time was get jealous.
Fast forward to the present day, when DeskScapes 2.0 is a reality. Whatever programming magic that needed to take place to get around needing Ultimate has, and I respect that it cost time and money to do it. So every non-Ultimate user will be charged $20 for essentially the same product that was originally offered for free, I can accept the fact that that money goes to the just cause of funding the work done (to do whatever) porting DeskScapes over to the other versions of Vista.
The problem is that Liquid Dream (and other premium dreams of the same age and price though this is the only one I want) has remained the same price to purchase as it was back then, when it was a purchase to be used with a free product. I think $10 is a reasonable amount to charge for it, a dynamic animation... but I really do not have much desire to purchase DeskScapes beyond this one dream- after all, you can only choose one to be your desktop wallpaper. If all were free, sure, I'd probably be happy to play around with a bunch of dreams like Ultimate users have been for a year. But when considering shelling out money for functionality that has already been available for free, I would like to get what I pay for. Now of course, I know that I actually WOULD get more than just this Dream for $30, but I really have no interest in paying for anything else.
To be blunt, I'd be perfectly content to just use the version of this dream that is distributed free in the Preview (and seeing it in action is how I decided I would be willing to pay anything at all for a desktop wallpaper), and I could live without the additional options offered, but it's bugged to hell and doesn't retain the image I set as the background, let alone the dynamic settings, when doing many screen-related tasks and never upon rebooting.
Beyond simply addressing these problems with the free edition (perhaps they are intentional, making the free version less of a limited product and more of a proof of concept that is actually of no pratical use), I think there are a variety of ways Stardock might improve this situation and probably sell a lot more copies of DeskScapes and Dreams, including to me.
1. Reduce the price of the dream to $4.95. A version of the dream that displays all of the graphical prowess of the animation is already being distributed, albeit with bugs that make it unusable. Obviously, though, the animation was not so costly to design that it was an unreasonable choice to distribute for free- I surmise that in the time close to a year since it was released, even if the entire cost of the development cycle for the dream hasn't been earned back, the margin is small enough that $9.95 isn't still necessary. $25 is the most I would spend just to have my desktop wallpaper look exactly the way I want.
2. Reduce the price of DeskScapes to $14.95 (or $9.95). Don't get me wrong, I'd love the functionality of DeskScapes and I think it's worthy of $20 purchase. The problem is that it isn't a new technology, and for a variety of users whether or not they were willing to pay for a dream or two, was free from the get-go. The people who didn't have Ultimate should be responsible for picking up the slack and I understand that, but again, all I want is to run Liquid Dream, and $25 is the most I could see spending on that.
3. Enable the free version of DeskScapes to use purchased premium dreams. This would actually be my favorite option, as I don't really want that much different than what my computer can already do with what it has- not 20 bucks worth, anyway. It still wouldn't be able to use any user created dreams or free dreams from Stardock, but it would be perfect for people like me who just want one or two dreams anyway. Further down the line, I can see myself eventually wanting to purchase the full version when I get bored, and then you could potentially still get my 20 bucks, too.
Again, even better than any of the above for somebody in my situation would be if you just fixed the free version. Or stopped being lame, if it was intentionally edited to be this way.
Anyway, I know that probably nothing will come from this rant. The product itself is beautiful and I'm extremely impressed that there's no CPU draw despite doing obviously real-time calculations (if you have it, move the sliders while you can see it and notice that the animation doesn't reload- previous waves can interact with new larger or smaller ones).

SUGGESTION: If you could make the ripples elliptical as opposed to circles then we can find more images that would work as background. So, instead looking straight down you'll be looking at the water surface at an angle, and that would make it possible use a variety of pictures as the background.

To change the Reflection Image to your own simply rename a .jpg or .bmp (maybe other formats too) to "" (you must setup windows to show file extensions in System>Folder Options and click OK if warning comes)
Copy this "" to "C:\ProgramData\Stardock\DeskScapes\ExtractedData\Liquid Dream\assets\" and overwrite the existing one.
In the Wallpaper Settings disable (enabling another) and reactivate the Dream (make sure you chose Clouds in Settings). Done.
No worries if you want the default back simply delete the "" in the \assets\ folder and reactivate the Dream this it will recreated it.
P.S.: I found no Web-cam Software that saves in .dds format and the Dream must be reactivate to load the new image.
Sorry for bad English

Comment #12 (Citizen) mokeyb Jun 23, 2007 10:49 AM I agree, this Dream is brilliant. Worth every penny. Although I think it would be great to be able to change the reflection image as another user suggested earlier. I also think it would be great if the day / night setting was automatic to synchronise to the time of day. Or even slightly varied lighting conditions, or reflection depending on what time of day. Or to take it even further. A completely simulated realtime scene that adjusts the lightning and reflection image depending on the time of day and weather. You could even simulate more ripples and droplets if its raining as well as displaying some big storm clouds in the reflection. This dream has a lot of potential. Anyone out there who can do it like this??? Purchased this DREAM,too and its just awesome but the poster before is right, this DREAM has lots of potential and an update would just be incredible!!!!! Best regards and nice Easter holidays, Gypsy from Germany

Under Windows 7, I can not use videos with DeskScapes. But this just shows it with many bugs, for example, I can not make settings. When it is ready for Windows 7?

It would be fine if someone would create a wave water moving (insted of the water droppings) Has someone an idea or made sure movement? Greetings Carol

For some reason in settings the reflection image is greyed out and inaccessable. Anybody know what that's about?

I'll pay for this providing you use the money to buy a rope to hang yourself. Anyone able to nickle and dime people for a desktop wallpaper is someone this world can do without. Even if your rich and can afford to throw money away on this sort of this, I encourage you not to, don't encourage the people shallow enough to put a pricetag on this sort of thing. Although not the same scale as the crooks on Wallstreet that bilked millions out of millions, its the same mindset of greed and profiteering thats so wrong with the world today.

More than 6 years old and still one of the best dreams out there. It suits perfectly as animated desktop background. It brings some life to the desktop without beeing distracting. The water effect is believable. A few more reflection images would be great though.

Edit: Just found out how to change the reflection image. Set windows explorer to show hidden files (google for it if you don't know how) and then browse to: C:\ProgramData\Stardock\DeskScapes\ExtractedData\Liquid Dream\assets

There you'll find all the images in dds format. If you own Photoshop, there is a free dds plugin available from Nvidia.

A freeware alterative is the program "Gimp" for which also a dds plugin is available.

You need to replace either the clouds or the night sky image with your own. (don't forget to backup the original file in case you want to restore it)  To see the new image you need to select another dream first.

Yes, it's inconvenient, but at least it's possible.

What the heck did you smoke? First, this is no wallpaper, it's an animation that sure took its time to be written. Second, it's 3$, man... Imagine how much money you've spent for all of the drugs that led to your...  state.
