in case you're interested, I will be releasing a blue & green version of this bootskin very soon (and possibly other colors).

Thanks Skinhit, I'm starting to get a better idea of what looks good.

This bootskin is actually comprised of several layers of images (each of them converted to greyscale and then rendered in the color shown), each made a little transparent so that the layers underneath show through. I found an image of the dna text string (letters like A T C G, etc.), then I found an image of a dna strand, I place both those items on top of bkrnd image which is just a dna like pattern (close knit different colored spheres randomly covering the entire bkgrnd) which is underneath everything you see here and all the images on top have the transparency adjusted so that the dna spheres show through. I placed the swirl image on top of everything (I'm using Macromedia Fireworks for all of this), the swirl is customizable and this one didn't seem too over the top for this bootskin. Added some random white bubbles behind the swirl which were highlighted with a black glow and it made the bubbles really pop (they stick out much better with a black glow, they don't blend into the bkgrnd), add a vista logo and a space for a progress bar and presto... you have a half-decent looking bootskin image - it's not a tutorial but if a wincustomize user/bootskinner is out there and they have a solid working knowledge of photoshop or fireworks, they should be able to reproduce this type of bootskin using the outline I've provided.

Working on green & blue versions right now which seem to be more challenging (16 colors limits you but also force you to be creative in other ways).

thanks again for the great feedback!

No problemo Xure - and thanks for the great feedback!
- you will find quite a few wincustomize users on this site that have written tutorials on plenty of skinning projects including bootskins. We all have to start somewhere and it's nice getting some ideas on how to create images. I'm still updating my bootskins every now & then but my new interest is creating windowblinds - alot of work but also alot of fun!
