The REAL Chatroom

Or alternative Chatroom

Wednesday, December 08, 2010 by morpheas768 | Discussion: Everything Else

Ok, so I decided to create a new Chatroom, because the old one was getting pretty....old!  [e digicons];P[/e]

Everyone may post here, as well as in the good'ol Flameroom...I mean, Chatroom [e digicons]*_*[/e]

I would like to keep this Chatroom civilized. Well, as civilized as most forum threads are (doesnt mean that you all have to be polite like Oatesy, lol).

So for this reason, I may update the OP of this thread in the future, posting certain thread rules, as I see fit.

For now though, post away, and everyone is welcome! [e digicons]:)[/e]

I've told you before, you put the noose around your waist, not your neck, and then you use it to help pull you up and out of bed, you silly pony.

The new one. Didn't know there was an 80's version.

The 80's version is a dance which originated in Harlem. Just like so many other such as the Mash Potato or the Running Man... The new version was the kinetic version of Planking or Owling and everyone was doing it. Here's one on a actual flying plane...

I didn't really start listening to 80's music until the 90's. Until then it was the 70's and 60's.

What action shall we take?

Rebelling against Steam?

I do that every day by not buying anything sold on it, or from companies that say they wont and then do.

LOL well, that's no fun.

Oh sure it is, because then all of that money I would have spent on those companies, I give to other companies, then talk about how much I've spent on the second on the first one's forums so everyone knows that I'm more then willing to spend, just don't like "those" places and won't support them.  Star Citizen, I'm a little less then $100 shy of hitting $4,000.  Will gladly cross that mark real soon.  Racing is coming online in the next patch and if new components show up in the store, my two racers will get some upgrades.  =]

Of all the potential things to do (for fun and possibly turn into a career in game), I think that racing will be my bread and butter.  If not then I'll settle for info runner or blockade runner.

So what if Star Citizen goes Steam? What then?

They won't.

They have a fan base that showers them with money already and have received more then they ever thought would ever be possible.  They and the community are their own publisher so they don't have to worry about someone else skimming money off the top 'to increase sales'.  Clearly Steam can't say we have player base and sales to offer.  They are their own distributor and use a http + p2p distribution setup once files on the main release branch are made available to the public.  Steam can't say we can host files for you.  CIG already has it's own matchmaking service and is creating statboards and other goodies like an app for your smartphone where you can get into things like swap out ship components and manage your inventory without being actually logged into the game, or use it as a second screen like what your mobiglas in game is supposed to be like. So they can't offer leader boards and stat tracking and would have to spend lots of money just to catch up in other areas.

Because the 'universe' is so massive (will be using double point precision rather then single point like every other game, basically a 64bit game world as opposed to a 32bit), they will have an artificial communications delay.  The farther apart you are, the longer transmissions take to arrive, if at all.  3rd party overlays and communication channels defeat this and break immersion so CIG will not support them unless they do the exact same thing.  Steam won't do this because it would keep players from talking/competing.  CIG doesn't give a damn about in game achievements that pop up when you complete something.  If you discover a jump point, no one will know until you submit the info to the UEE at which point, an in fiction news broadcast will be made letting everyone know about it, who discovered it, and what limited exploration on the other side has discovered.  And lets be honest, who really gives a shit if someone mined 50,000 precious gems or not, especially if you play the game for the first person shooting or racing?  Different people have different goals and trying to lump the entire fan base together is counter to the design of the game.  CIG wants people to be different, they want people to venture out and go different ways, they want you to play together, but they don't want you to be forced to.

And the final nail is this: CIG is very good about responding to the needs and complaints of their fans, and most, while unlike me, have never had issues with Steam and support them fully, still make it perfectly clear that they don't want it on there because of all of the other crap Steam can and will do that will take away from the game rather then add to it.

Well, I hope it stays that way. Steam seems to becoming a bit of a monoply. Pity Stardock didn't want to keep Impulse. They seemed like they could have challenged Steam properly. Not Gamestop.

I get that whole deal offloading Impulse from a business stand point.  It was it's own animal hogging up resources forcing the company to either prioritize content delivery over all other things, or cut it loose and continue making games.  From a consumer stand point, I didn't care to be lied to about the switch.

Besides there are other delivery systems from other companies out there.  Even if people hate EA, at least they have the money to pump into Origin and go toe to toe with Steam, which would allow smaller ones like Blizzard's CDN, Impulse, and the other Indies to at least build and flourish under the RADAR.
